The error message 'NMI watchdog failed to create perf event...'
does not make it clear that this is a fatal error for the
watchdog. It also currently prints the error value as a
pointer, rather than extracting the error code with PTR_ERR().
Fix that.
Add a note to the description of the 'nowatchdog' kernel

Rename the header and the struct and defines in it to make this clear.

This patch (as1431c) makes the synchronous runtime-PM interface
suitable for use in interrupt handlers. Subsystems can call the new
pm_runtime_irq_safe() function to tell the PM core that a device's
runtime_suspend and runtime_resume callbacks should be invoked with
interrupts disabled and the spinlock held. This permits the
pm_runtime_get_sync() and the new pm_runtime_put_sync_suspend()
routines to be called from within interrupt handlers.
When a device is declared irq-safe in this way, the PM core increments
the parent's usage count, so the parent will never be runtime
suspended. This prevents difficult situations in which an irq-safe
device can't resume because it is forced to wait for its non-irq-safe
parent.

This patch adds support for linking device tree blob(s) into
vmlinux. Modifies asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h to add linking
.dtb sections into vmlinux. To maintain compatiblity with the of/fdt
driver code platforms MUST copy the blob to a non-init memory location
before the kernel frees the .init.* sections in the image.
Modifies scripts/Makefile.lib to add a kbuild command to
compile DTS files to device tree blobs and a rule to create objects to
wrap the blobs for linking.
STRUCT_ALIGNMENT is defined in vmlinux.lds.h for use in the rule to
create wrapper objects for the dtb in Makefile.lib. The
STRUCT_ALIGN() macro in vmlinux.lds.h is modified to use the
STRUCT_ALIGNMENT definition.
The DTB's are placed on 32 byte boundries to allow parsing the blob
with driver/of/fdt.c during early boot without having to copy the blob
to get the structure alignment GCC expects.
A DTB is linked in by adding the DTB object to the list of objects to
be linked into vmlinux in the archtecture specific Makefile using
obj-y += foo.dtb.o

The taskstats structure is internally aligned on 8 byte boundaries but the
layout of the aggregrate reply, with two NLA headers and the pid (each 4
bytes), actually force the entire structure to be unaligned. This causes
the kernel to issue unaligned access warnings on some architectures like
ia64. Unfortunately, some software out there doesn't properly unroll the
NLA packet and assumes that the start of the taskstats structure will
always be 20 bytes from the start of the netlink payload. Aligning the
start of the taskstats structure breaks this software, which we don't
want. So, for now the alignment only happens on architectures that
require it and those users will have to update to fixed versions of those
packages. Space is reserved in the packet only when needed. This ifdef
should be removed in several years e.g. 2012 once we can be confident
that fixed versions are installed on most systems. We add the padding
before the aggregate since the aggregate is already a defined type.
Commit 85893120 ("delayacct: align to 8 byte boundary on 64-bit systems")
previously addressed the alignment issues by padding out the pid field.
This was supposed to be a compatible change but the circumstances
described above mean that it wasn't. This patch backs out that change,
since it was a hack, and introduces a new NULL attribute type to provide
the padding. Padding the response with 4 bytes avoids allocating an
aligned taskstats structure and copying it back. Since the structure
weighs in at 328 bytes, it's too big to do it on the stack.

When correlating ftrace results with /proc/vmstat, I noticed that the
reporting scripts value for "pages scanned" differed significantly. Both
values were "right" depending on how you look at it.
The difference is due to vmstat only counting scanning of the inactive
list towards pages scanned. The analysis script for the tracepoint counts
active and inactive list yielding a far higher value than vmstat. The
resulting scanning/reclaim ratio looks much worse. The tracepoint is ok
but this patch updates the reporting script so that the report values for

executed if pm_runtime_suspended() returns true, but it does so

power.disable_depth device field is ignored by it. This leads to
problems (i.e. devices are not suspened when they should), so rework

This patch adds a generic infrastructure for policy-based dequeueing of
TX packets and provides two policies:
* a simple FIFO policy (which is the default) and
* a priority based policy (set via socket options).
Both policies honour the tx_qlen sysctl for the maximum size of the write
queue (can be overridden via socket options).
The priority policy uses skb->priority internally to assign an u32 priority
identifier, using the same ranking as SO_PRIORITY. The skb->priority field
is set to 0 when the packet leaves DCCP. The priority is supplied as ancillary
data using cmsg(3), the patch also provides the requisite parsing routines.

A recurring complaint from CFS users is that parallel kbuild has
a negative impact on desktop interactivity. This patch
implements an idea from Linus, to automatically create task
groups. Currently, only per session autogroups are implemented,
but the patch leaves the way open for enhancement.
Implementation: each task's signal struct contains an inherited
pointer to a refcounted autogroup struct containing a task group
pointer, the default for all tasks pointing to the
init_task_group. When a task calls setsid(), a new task group
is created, the process is moved into the new task group, and a
reference to the preveious task group is dropped. Child
processes inherit this task group thereafter, and increase it's
refcount. When the last thread of a process exits, the
process's reference is dropped, such that when the last process
referencing an autogroup exits, the autogroup is destroyed.
At runqueue selection time, IFF a task has no cgroup assignment,
its current autogroup is used.
Autogroup bandwidth is controllable via setting it's nice level
through the proc filesystem:
cat /proc/<pid>/autogroup
Displays the task's group and the group's nice level.
echo <nice level> > /proc/<pid>/autogroup
Sets the task group's shares to the weight of nice <level> task.
Setting nice level is rate limited for !admin users due to the
abuse risk of task group locking.
The feature is enabled from boot by default if
CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP=y is selected, but can be disabled via
the boot option noautogroup, and can also be turned on/off on
the fly via:
echo [01] > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
... which will automatically move tasks to/from the root task group.

Define a new kernel key-type called 'trusted'. Trusted keys are random
number symmetric keys, generated and RSA-sealed by the TPM. The TPM
only unseals the keys, if the boot PCRs and other criteria match.
Userspace can only ever see encrypted blobs.
Based on suggestions by Jason Gunthorpe, several new options have been
added to support additional usages.
The new options are:
migratable= designates that the key may/may not ever be updated
(resealed under a new key, new pcrinfo or new auth.)
pcrlock=n extends the designated PCR 'n' with a random value,
so that a key sealed to that PCR may not be unsealed
again until after a reboot.
keyhandle= specifies the sealing/unsealing key handle.
keyauth= specifies the sealing/unsealing key auth.
blobauth= specifies the sealed data auth.
Implementation of a kernel reserved locality for trusted keys will be
investigated for a possible future extension.
Changelog:
- Updated and added examples to Documentation/keys-trusted-encrypted.txt
- Moved generic TPM constants to include/linux/tpm_command.h
(David Howell's suggestion.)
- trusted_defined.c: replaced kzalloc with kmalloc, added pcrlock failure
error handling, added const qualifiers where appropriate.
- moved to late_initcall
- updated from hash to shash (suggestion by David Howells)
- reduced worst stack usage (tpm_seal) from 530 to 312 bytes
- moved documentation to Documentation directory (suggestion by David Howells)
- all the other code cleanups suggested by David Howells
- Add pcrlock CAP_SYS_ADMIN dependency (based on comment by Jason Gunthorpe)
- New options: migratable, pcrlock, keyhandle, keyauth, blobauth (based on
discussions with Jason Gunthorpe)
- Free payload on failure to create key(reported/fixed by Roberto Sassu)
- Updated Kconfig and other descriptions (based on Serge Hallyn's suggestion)

tcp_win_from_space() does the following:
if (sysctl_tcp_adv_win_scale <= 0)
return space >> (-sysctl_tcp_adv_win_scale);
else
return space - (space >> sysctl_tcp_adv_win_scale);
"space" is int.
As per C99 6.5.7 (3) shifting int for 32 or more bits is
undefined behaviour.
Indeed, if sysctl_tcp_adv_win_scale is exactly 32,
space >> 32 equals space and function returns 0.
Which means we busyloop in tcp_fixup_rcvbuf().
Restrict net.ipv4.tcp_adv_win_scale to [-31, 31].

Swap accounting can be configured by CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR_SWAP
configuration option and then it is turned on by default. There is a boot
option (noswapaccount) which can disable this feature.
This makes it hard for distributors to enable the configuration option as
this feature leads to a bigger memory consumption and this is a no-go for
general purpose distribution kernel. On the other hand swap accounting
may be very usuful for some workloads.
This patch adds a new configuration option which controls the default
behavior (CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR_SWAP_ENABLED). If the option is selected
then the feature is turned on by default.
It also adds a new boot parameter swapaccount[=1|0] which enhances the
original noswapaccount parameter semantic by means of enable/disable logic
(defaults to 1 if no value is provided to be still consistent with
noswapaccount).
The default behavior is unchanged (if CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR_SWAP is
enabled then CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR_SWAP_ENABLED is enabled as well)

Rather than rely on redirections, this patch updates
the addresses appropriately; for the most part, only

o Allow hierarchical cgroup creation for blkio controller
o Currently we disallow it as both the io controller policies (throttling
as well as proportion bandwidth) do not support hierarhical accounting
and control. But the flip side is that blkio controller can not be used with
libvirt as libvirt creates a cgroup hierarchy deeper than 1 level.
<top-level-cgroup-dir>/<controller>/libvirt/qemu/<virtual-machine-groups>
o So this patch will allow creation of cgroup hierarhcy but at the backend
everything will be treated as flat. So if somebody created a an hierarchy
like as follows.
root
/ \
test1 test2
|
test3
CFQ and throttling will practically treat all groups at same level.
pivot
/ | \ \
root test1 test2 test3
o Once we have actual support for hierarchical accounting and control
then we can introduce another cgroup tunable file "blkio.use_hierarchy"
which will be 0 by default but if user wants to enforce hierarhical
control then it can be set to 1. This way there should not be any
ABI problems down the line.
o The only not so pretty part is introduction of extra file "use_hierarchy"
down the line. Kame-san had mentioned that hierarhical accounting is
expensive in memory controller hence they keep it off by default. I
suspect same will be the case for IO controller also as for each IO
completion we shall have to account IO through hierarchy up to the root.
if yes, then it probably is not a very bad idea to introduce this extra
file so that it will be used only when somebody needs it and some people
might enable hierarchy only in part of the hierarchy.
o This is how basically memory controller also uses "use_hierarhcy" and
they also allowed creation of hierarchies when actual backend support
was not available.

Currently, blinking LEDs can be awkward because it is not guaranteed that
all LEDs implement blinking. The trigger that wants it to blink then
needs to implement its own timer solution.
Rather than require that, add led_blink_set() API that triggers can use.
This function will attempt to use hw blinking, but if that fails
implements a timer for it. To stop blinking again, brightness_set() also
needs to be wrapped into API that will stop the software blink.
As a result of this, the timer trigger becomes a very trivial one, and
hopefully we can finally see triggers using blinking as well because it's
always easy to use.

The kernel syslog contains debugging information that is often useful
during exploitation of other vulnerabilities, such as kernel heap
addresses. Rather than futilely attempt to sanitize hundreds (or
thousands) of printk statements and simultaneously cripple useful
debugging functionality, it is far simpler to create an option that
prevents unprivileged users from reading the syslog.
This patch, loosely based on grsecurity's GRKERNSEC_DMESG, creates the
dmesg_restrict sysctl. When set to "0", the default, no restrictions are
enforced. When set to "1", only users with CAP_SYS_ADMIN can read the
kernel syslog via dmesg(8) or other mechanisms.

The SWP instruction was deprecated in the ARMv6 architecture,
superseded by the LDREX/STREX family of instructions for
load-linked/store-conditional operations. The ARMv7 multiprocessing
extensions mandate that SWP/SWPB instructions are treated as undefined
from reset, with the ability to enable them through the System Control
Register SW bit.
This patch adds the alternative solution to emulate the SWP and SWPB
instructions using LDREX/STREX sequences, and log statistics to
/proc/cpu/swp_emulation. To correctly deal with copy-on-write, it also
modifies cpu_v7_set_pte_ext to change the mappings to priviliged RO when

When the lazy_itable_init extended option is passed to mke2fs, it
considerably speeds up filesystem creation because inode tables are
not zeroed out. The fact that parts of the inode table are
uninitialized is not a problem so long as the block group descriptors,
which contain information regarding how much of the inode table has
been initialized, has not been corrupted However, if the block group
checksums are not valid, e2fsck must scan the entire inode table, and
the the old, uninitialized data could potentially cause e2fsck to
report false problems.
Hence, it is important for the inode tables to be initialized as soon
as possble. This commit adds this feature so that mke2fs can safely
use the lazy inode table initialization feature to speed up formatting
file systems.
This is done via a new new kernel thread called ext4lazyinit, which is
created on demand and destroyed, when it is no longer needed. There
is only one thread for all ext4 filesystems in the system. When the
first filesystem with inititable mount option is mounted, ext4lazyinit
thread is created, then the filesystem can register its request in the
request list.
This thread then walks through the list of requests picking up
scheduled requests and invoking ext4_init_inode_table(). Next schedule
time for the request is computed by multiplying the time it took to
zero out last inode table with wait multiplier, which can be set with
the (init_itable=n) mount option (default is 10). We are doing
this so we do not take the whole I/O bandwidth. When the thread is no
longer necessary (request list is empty) it frees the appropriate
structures and exits (and can be created later later by another
filesystem).
We do not disturb regular inode allocations in any way, it just do not
care whether the inode table is, or is not zeroed. But when zeroing, we
have to skip used inodes, obviously. Also we should prevent new inode
allocations from the group, while zeroing is on the way. For that we
take write alloc_sem lock in ext4_init_inode_table() and read alloc_sem
in the ext4_claim_inode, so when we are unlucky and allocator hits the
group which is currently being zeroed, it just has to wait.
This can be suppresed using the mount option no_init_itable.

Task delay-accounting was identified as one means of determining how long
a process spends in congestion_wait() without adding new statistics. For
example, if the workload should not be doing IO, delay-accounting could
reveal how long it was spending in unexpected IO or delays.
Unfortunately, on closer examination it was clear that getdelays does not
act as documented.
Commit a3baf649 ("per-task-delay-accounting: documentation") added
Documentation/accounting/getdelays.c with a -c switch that was documented
to fork/exec a child and report statistics on it but for reasons that are
unclear to me, commit 9e06d3f9 deleted support for this switch but did not
update the documentation. It might be an oversight or it might be because
the control flow of the program meant that accounting information would be
printed once early in the lifetime of the program making it of limited
use.
This patch reimplements -c for getdelays.c to act as documented. Unlike
the original version, it waits until the command completes before printing
any information on it. An example of it being used looks like
$ ./getdelays -d -c find /home/mel -name mel

The ns_cgroup is a control group interacting with the namespaces. When a
new namespace is created, a corresponding cgroup is automatically created
too. The cgroup name is the pid of the process who did 'unshare' or the
child of 'clone'.
This cgroup is tied with the namespace because it prevents a process to
escape the control group and use the post_clone callback, so the child
cgroup inherits the values of the parent cgroup.
Unfortunately, the more we use this cgroup and the more we are facing
problems with it:
(1) when a process unshares, the cgroup name may conflict with a
previous cgroup with the same pid, so unshare or clone return -EEXIST
(2) the cgroup creation is out of control because there may have an
application creating several namespaces where the system will
automatically create several cgroups in his back and let them on the
cgroupfs (eg. a vrf based on the network namespace).
(3) the mix of (1) and (2) force an administrator to regularly check
and clean these cgroups.
This patchset removes the ns_cgroup by adding a new flag to the cgroup and
the cgroupfs mount option. It enables the copy of the parent cgroup when
a child cgroup is created. We can then safely remove the ns_cgroup as
this flag brings a compatibility. We have now to manually create and add
the task to a cgroup, which is consistent with the cgroup framework.

It adds a control file 'clone_children' for a cgroup. This control file
is a boolean specifying if the child cgroup should be a clone of the
parent cgroup or not. The default value is 'false'.
This flag makes the child cgroup to call the post_clone callback of all
the subsystem, if it is available.
At present, the cpuset is the only one which had implemented the
post_clone callback.
The option can be set at mount time by specifying the 'clone_children'
mount option.

When dirty_ratio or dirty_bytes is written the other parameter is disabled
and set to 0 (in dirty_bytes_handler() / dirty_ratio_handler()).
We do the same for dirty_background_ratio and dirty_background_bytes.
However, in the sysctl documentation, we say that the counterpart becomes
a function of the old value, that is not correct.
Clarify the documentation reporting the actual behaviour.
