fe0f07d08e direct-io: only inc/dec inode->i_dio_count for file systems
do_blockdev_direct_IO() increments and decrements the inode
->i_dio_count for each IO operation. It does this to protect against
truncate of a file. Block devices don't need this sort of protection.

For a capable multiqueue setup, this atomic int is the only shared
state between applications accessing the device for O_DIRECT, and it
presents a scaling wall for that. In my testing, as much as 30% of
system time is spent incrementing and decrementing this value. A mixed
read/write workload improved from ~2.5M IOPS to ~9.6M IOPS, with
better latencies too. Before:

The more applications accessing the device, the worse it gets.

Add a new direct-io flags, DIO_SKIP_DIO_COUNT, which tells
do_blockdev_direct_IO() that it need not worry about incrementing
or decrementing the inode i_dio_count for this caller.

c775707483 fs/nfs: fix new compiler warning about boolean in switch
The brand new GCC 5.1.0 warns by default on using a boolean in the
switch condition. This results in the following warning:

This code was obviously using switch to make use of the fall-through

3708f842e1 Revert "nfs: replace nfs_add_stats with nfs_inc_stats when add one"
This reverts commit 5a254d08b0.

Since commit 5a254d08b0 ("nfs: replace nfs_add_stats with
nfs_inc_stats when add one"), nfs_readpage and nfs_do_writepage use
nfs_inc_stats to increment NFSIOS_READPAGES and NFSIOS_WRITEPAGES
instead of nfs_add_stats.

However nfs_inc_stats does not do the same thing as nfs_add_stats with
value 1 because these functions work on distinct stats:
nfs_inc_stats increments stats from "enum nfs_stat_eventcounters" (in
server->io_stats->events) and nfs_add_stats those from "enum
nfs_stat_bytecounters" (in server->io_stats->bytes).

This file is only used internally to the NFS v4 module, so it doesn't
need to be in the global include path.  I also renamed it from

f9ebd61855 NFS: Remove CONFIG_NFS_V4 checks from nfs_idmap.h
The idmapper is completely internal to the NFS v4 module, so this macro
will always evaluate to true.  This patch also removes unnecessary

7c61f0d389 NFS: Add a stub for GETDEVICELIST
d4b18c3e (pnfs: remove GETDEVICELIST implementation) removed the
GETDEVICELIST operation from the NFS client, but left a "hole" in the
nfs4_procedures array.  This caused /proc/self/mountstats to report an
operation named "51" where GETDEVICELIST used to be.  This patch adds a
stub to fix mountstats.

1ccbad9f9f nfs: fix DIO good bytes calculation
For direct read that has IO size larger than rsize, we'll split
it into several READ requests and nfs_direct_good_bytes() would
count completed bytes incorrectly by eating last zero count reply.

Fix it by handling mirror and non-mirror cases differently such that
we only count mirrored writes differently.

This fixes 5fadeb47("nfs: count DIO good bytes correctly with mirroring").

ea96d1ecbe nfs: Fetch MOUNTED_ON_FILEID when updating an inode
2ef47eb1 (NFS: Fix use of nfs_attr_use_mounted_on_fileid()) was a good
start to fixing a circular directory structure warning for NFS v4
"junctioned" mountpoints.  Unfortunately, further testing continued to
generate this error.

My server is configured like this:

I've been running chown across the entire mountpoint twice in a row to
hit this problem.  The first run succeeds, but the second one fails with
the circular directory warning along with:

WHere 0x80 is the mountpoint's fileid and 0x100080 is the mounted-on
fileid.

This patch fixes the issue by requesting an updated mounted-on fileid
from the server during nfs_update_inode(), and then checking that the
fileid stored in the nfs_inode matches either the fileid or mounted-on
fileid returned by the server.

5d05e54af3 nfs: fix high load average due to callback thread sleeping
Chuck pointed out a problem that crept in with commit 6ffa30d3f7 (nfs:
don't call blocking operations while !TASK_RUNNING). Linux counts tasks
in uninterruptible sleep against the load average, so this caused the
system's load average to be pinned at at least 1 when there was a
NFSv4.1+ mount active.

Not a huge problem, but it's probably worth fixing before we get too
many complaints about it. This patch converts the code back to use
TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE sleep, simply has it flush any signals on each loop
iteration. In practice no one should really be signalling this thread at
all, so I think this is reasonably safe.

With this change, there's also no need to game the hung task watchdog so
we can also convert the schedule_timeout call back to a normal schedule.

f830f7ddd9 NFS: Reduce time spent holding the i_mutex during fallocate()
At the very least, we should not be taking the i_mutex until after
checking if the server even supports ALLOCATE or DEALLOCATE, allowing
v4.0 or v4.1 to exit without potentially waiting on a lock.

9a51940bf6 NFS: Don't zap caches on fallocate()
This patch adds a GETATTR to the end of ALLOCATE and DEALLOCATE
operations so we can set the updated inode size and change attribute
directly.  DEALLOCATE will still need to release pagecache pages, so
nfs42_proc_deallocate() now calls truncate_pagecache_range() before
contacting the server.

2813893f8b kernel: conditionally support non-root users, groups and capabilities
There are a lot of embedded systems that run most or all of their
functionality in init, running as root:root.  For these systems,
supporting multiple users is not necessary.

This patch adds a new symbol, CONFIG_MULTIUSER, that makes support for
non-root users, non-root groups, and capabilities optional.  It is enabled
under CONFIG_EXPERT menu.

When this symbol is not defined, UID and GID are zero in any possible case
and processes always have all capabilities.

The following syscalls are compiled out: setuid, setregid, setgid,
setreuid, setresuid, getresuid, setresgid, getresgid, setgroups,
getgroups, setfsuid, setfsgid, capget, capset.

Also, groups.c is compiled out completely.

In kernel/capability.c, capable function was moved in order to avoid
adding two ifdef blocks.

This change saves about 25 KB on a defconfig build.  The most minimal
kernels have total text sizes in the high hundreds of kB rather than
low MB.  (The 25k goes down a bit with allnoconfig, but not that much.

The kernel was booted in Qemu.  All the common functionalities work.
Adding users/groups is not possible, failing with -ENOSYS.

b9ea25152e page_writeback: clean up mess around cancel_dirty_page()
This patch replaces cancel_dirty_page() with a helper function
account_page_cleaned() which only updates counters.  It's called from
truncate_complete_page() and from try_to_free_buffers() (hack for ext3).
Page is locked in both cases, page-lock protects against concurrent
dirtiers: see commit 2d6d7f9828 ("mm: protect set_page_dirty() from
ongoing truncation").

Delete_from_page_cache() shouldn't be called for dirty pages, they must
be handled by caller (either written or truncated).  This patch treats
final dirty accounting fixup at the end of __delete_from_page_cache() as
a debug check and adds WARN_ON_ONCE() around it.  If something removes
dirty pages without proper handling that might be a bug and unwritten
data might be lost.

Hugetlbfs has no dirty pages accounting, ClearPageDirty() is enough
here.

cancel_dirty_page() in nfs_wb_page_cancel() is redundant.  This is
helper for nfs_invalidate_page() and it's called only in case complete
invalidation.

The mess was started in v2.6.20 after commits 46d2277c79 ("Clean up
and make try_to_free_buffers() not race with dirty pages") and
3e67c0987d ("truncate: clear page dirtiness before running
try_to_free_buffers()") first was reverted right in v2.6.20 in commit
ecdfc9787f ("Resurrect 'try_to_free_buffers()' VM hackery"), second in
v2.6.25 commit a2b345642f ("Fix dirty page accounting leak with ext3
data=journal").

Custom fixes were introduced between these points.  NFS in v2.6.23, commit
1b3b4a1a2d ("NFS: Fix a write request leak in nfs_invalidate_page()").
Kludge in __delete_from_page_cache() in v2.6.24, commit 3a6927906f ("Do
dirty page accounting when removing a page from the page cache").  Since
v2.6.25 all of them are redundant.

6f67376318 direct_IO: use iov_iter_rw() instead of rw everywhere
The rw parameter to direct_IO is redundant with iov_iter->type, and
treated slightly differently just about everywhere it's used: some users
do rw & WRITE, and others do rw == WRITE where they should be doing a
bitwise check. Simplify this with the new iov_iter_rw() helper, which
always returns either READ or WRITE.

The LAYOUTCOMMIT operation means different things to different layout types.
For blocks and objects, it is both a data and metadata consistency operation.
For files and flexfiles, it is only a metadata consistency operation.

This patch separates out the 2 cases, allowing the files/flexfiles layout
drivers to optimise away the data consistency calls to layoutcommit.

04b2fa9f8f fs: split generic and aio kiocb
Most callers in the kernel want to perform synchronous file I/O, but
still have to bloat the stack with a full struct kiocb.  Split out
the parts needed in filesystem code from those in the aio code, and
only allocate those needed to pass down argument on the stack.  The
aio code embedds the generic iocb in the one it allocates and can
easily get back to it by using container_of.

Also add a ->ki_complete method to struct kiocb, this is used to call
into the aio code and thus removes the dependency on aio for filesystems
impementing asynchronous operations.  It will also allow other callers
to substitute their own completion callback.

We also add a new ->ki_flags field to work around the nasty layering
violation recently introduced in commit 5e33f6 ("usb: gadget: ffs: add
eventfd notification about ffs events").

discarded when built into the kernel, as pointed out by this

874f946376 NFS: Fix a regression in the read() syscall
When invalidating the page cache for a regular file, we want to first
sync all dirty data to disk and then call invalidate_inode_pages2().
The latter relies on nfs_launder_page() and nfs_release_page() to deal
respectively with dirty pages, and unstable written pages.

When commit 9590544694 ("NFS: avoid deadlocks with loop-back mounted
NFS filesystems.") changed the behaviour of nfs_release_page(), then it
made it possible for invalidate_inode_pages2() to fail with an EBUSY.
Unfortunately, that error is then propagated back to read().

Let's therefore work around the problem for now by protecting the call
to sync the data and invalidate_inode_pages2() so that they are atomic
w.r.t. the addition of new writes.
Later on, we can revisit whether or not we still need nfs_launder_page()
and nfs_release_page().

369d6b7f00 NFS: Fix stateid used for NFS v4 closes
After 566fcec60 the client uses the "current stateid" from the
nfs4_state structure to close a file.  This could potentially contain a
delegation stateid, which is disallowed by the protocol and causes
servers to return NFS4ERR_BAD_STATEID.  This patch restores the
(correct) behavior of sending the open stateid to close a file.

fa9233699c NFS: Don't require a filehandle to refresh the inode in nfs_prime_dcache()
If the server does not return a valid set of attributes that we can
use to either create a file or refresh the inode, then there is no
value in calling nfs_prime_dcache().

However if we're just refreshing the inode using the attributes that
the server returned, then it shouldn't matter whether or not we have
a filehandle, as long as we check the fsid+fileid combination.

1ae04b2523 NFSv3: Use the readdir fileid as the mounted-on-fileid
When we call readdirplus, set the fileid normally returned by readdir
as the mounted-on-fileid, since that is commonly the case if there is
a mountpoint. To ensure that we get it right, we only set the flag if
the readdir fileid differs from the one returned in the readdirplus
attributes.

This again means that we can avoid the issues described in commit
2ef47eb1ae ("NFS: Fix use of nfs_attr_use_mounted_on_fileid()"),
which only fixed NFSv4.

6c441c254e NFS: Don't invalidate a submounted dentry in nfs_prime_dcache()
If we're traversing a directory which contains a submounted filesystem,
or one that has a referral, the NFS server that is processing the READDIR
request will often return information for the underlying (mounted-on)
directory. It may, or may not, also return filehandle information.

If this happens, and the lookup in nfs_prime_dcache() returns the
dentry for the submounted directory, the filehandle comparison will
fail, and we call d_invalidate(). Post-commit 8ed936b567
("vfs: Lazily remove mounts on unlinked files and directories."), this
means the entire subtree is unmounted.

The following minimal patch addresses this problem by punting on
the invalidation if there is a submount.

00fb4c9f84 NFS: Remove size hack in nfs_inode_attrs_need_update()
Prior to this patch, we used to always OK attribute updates that extended
the file size on the assumption that we might be performing writeback.
Now that we have attribute barriers to protect the writeback related updates,
we should remove this hack, as it can cause truncate() operations to
apparently be reverted if/when a readahead or getattr RPC call races
with our on-the-wire SETATTR.

f044636d97 NFS: Add attribute update barriers to nfs_setattr_update_inode()
Ensure that other operations which raced with our setattr RPC call
cannot revert the file attribute changes that were made on the server.
To do so, we artificially bump the attribute generation counter on
the inode so that all calls to nfs_fattr_init() that precede ours
will be dropped.

The motivation for the patch came from Chuck Lever's reports of readaheads
racing with truncate operations and causing the file size to be reverted.

aa5accea40 NFS: Ensure that buffered writes wait for O_DIRECT writes to complete
The O_DIRECT code will grab the inode->i_mutex and flush out buffered
writes, before scheduling a read or a write. However there is no
equivalent in the buffered write code to wait for O_DIRECT to complete.

Fixes a reported issue in xfstests generic/133, when first performing an
O_DIRECT write followed by a buffered write.

That laconic "some MM" is mainly the removal of remap_file_pages(),

remap_file_pages() syscall still exists, it's just done by emulating the
old behavior by creating a lot of individual small mappings instead of

The emulation is slower than the old "native" non-linear mappings, but
nobody really uses or cares about remap_file_pages(), and simplifying
the VM is a big advantage.

6ae373394c NFSv4.1: Ask for no delegation on OPEN if using O_DIRECT
If we're using NFSv4.1, then we have the ability to let the server know
whether or not we believe that returning a delegation as part of our OPEN
request would be useful.
The feature needs to be used with care, since the client sending the request
doesn't necessarily know how other clients are using that file, and how
they may be affected by the delegation.
For this reason, our initial use of the feature will be to let the server
know when the client believes that handing out a delegation would not be
useful.
The first application for this function is when opening the file using
O_DIRECT.

Before mirroring support was added, the pageio descriptor's pg_lseg was
set to null when an RPC was sent. Because of this, pg_init was called
at lseg boundaries with pg_lseg = NULL, and it could be set to the new
lseg.

With pgio refactoring in v3.15, .init_read and .init_write can be
called with valid pgio->pg_lseg. file layout was fixed at that time

layouts). But the generic helper still needs to be fixed.

5fadeb47dc nfs: count DIO good bytes correctly with mirroring
When resending to MDS, we might resend multiple mirroring
requests to MDS. As a result, nfs_direct_good_bytes() ends
up counting bytes multiple times, causing application to
get wrong return results in read/write syscalls.

Fix it by tracking start of a dreq and checking the range of
pgio header.

c829013dca nfs41: add NFS_LAYOUT_RETRY_LAYOUTGET to layout header flags
Use it to indicate that LD wants to retry layoutget. LD can set
it whenever it wants the common pnfs code to return and retry
pnfs path through a new layout.

The bit gets cleared when client does a new layoutget, when client
closes the file (ROC case), or when kernel needs to evict the inode
(non-ROC case).

193e3aa2cc nfs41: introduce NFS_LAYOUT_RETURN_BEFORE_CLOSE
When it is set, generic pnfs would try to send layoutreturn right
before last close/delegation_return regard less NFS_LAYOUT_ROC is
set or not. LD can then make sure layoutreturn is always sent
rather than being omitted.

The difference against NFS_LAYOUT_RETURN is that
NFS_LAYOUT_RETURN_BEFORE_CLOSE does not block usage of the layout so
LD can set it and expect generic layer to try pnfs path at the
same time.

This patch adds mirrored write support to the pgio layer. The default
is to use one mirror, but pgio callers may define callbacks to change
this to any value up to the (arbitrarily selected) limit of 16.

The basic idea is to break out members of nfs_pageio_descriptor that cannot
be shared between mirrored DSes and put them in a new structure.

016256df3a nfs41: add a helper to mark layout for return
It marks all matching layout segments as NFS_LSEG_LAYOUTRETURN,
which is an indicator for pnfs_put_lseg() to send layoutreturn,
and also prevents pnfs_update_layout() from using the returning
segments. Once it is set, it never gets cleared.

It also sets proper io failure bit so that pnfs path can be retried
after PNFS_LAYOUTGET_RETRY_TIMEOUT second.

Per RFC 5661 Errata 3208:
| A client MAY always forget its layout state and associated
| layout stateid at any time (See also section 12.5.5.1).
| In such case, the client MUST use a non-layout stateid for the next
| LAYOUTGET operation. This will signal the server that the client has
| no more layouts on the file and its respective layout state can be
| released before issuing a new layout in response to LAYOUTGET.

In order to make such a signal unique to server, client needs to serialize
all layoutgets using non-layout stateid. We implement this by serializing
layoutgets when client has no layout segments at hand.

46a5ab4754 nfs: allow to specify cred in nfs_initiate_pgio
so that flexfile layout client can pass in DS credential instead of
using user cred, which will be done in the next patch.
