afda0f9448 perf build-id: Fix filename size calculation
The filename is a pointer variable so the sizeof(filename) will return
length of a pointer. Fix it by using 'size'.

759a3cc625 ktest: Fix reboot on success stopping all reboots
The change to let individual tests decide to reboot the machine on
success of the entire test also prevented errors from rebooting
when an error was detected.

The "no_reboot" variable was only cleared if the test had
reboot_on_success set. But the no_reboot variable also prevents the test
rebooting when an error was detected even when REBOOT_ON_ERROR was set.

Add a new "reboot_success" variable that is used to determine if the
test should reboot on success and not touch the no_reboot variable.

5158ba3ea7 ktest.pl: Fix combined usage of BISECT_REVERSE and BISECT_SKIP
When BISECT_REVERSE and BISECT_SKIP are used together with boot or test
testing, build failures are treated as boot or test failures and
'git bisect bad' is executed instead of 'git bisect skip'. This is because
the $ret value of -1 is treated as a build failure, but the $reverse_bisect
logic does not properly handle this.

Simple fix, only invert it if it is positive.

9d1ef56d57 perf annotate browser: Show current jump, back or forward
Instead of trying to show the current loop by naively looking for the
next backward jump, just use 'j' to toggle showing arrows connecting
jump with its target.

And do it for forward jumps as well.

Loop detection requires more code to follow the flow control, etc.

1fa2e84db3 Fixes on top of the previous perf/annotate pull request
. Sometimes a jump points to an offset with no instructions, make the
   mark jump targets function handle that, for now just ignoring such
   jump targets, more investigation is needed to figure out how to cope
   with that.

 . Handle jump targets that are outside the function, for now just don't

Annotation improvements:

Now the default annotate browser uses a much more compact format, implementing
suggestions made made by several people, notably Linus.

Here is part of the new __list_del_entry() annotation:

    0.00 │      leaveq
    0.00 │      retq

The infrastructure is there to provide formatters for any instruction,
like the one I'll do for call functions to elide the address.

Further fixes on top of the first iteration:

- Sometimes a jump points to an offset with no instructions, make the
  mark jump targets function handle that, for now just ignoring such
  jump targets, more investigation is needed to figure out how to cope
  with that.

- Handle jump targets that are outside the function, for now just don't
  try to draw the connector arrow, right thing seems to be to mark this
  jump with a -> (right arrow) and handle it like a callq.

fb29fa58e3 perf annotate: Mark jump instructions with no offset
I.e. jumps that go to code outside the current function, that is denoted
in objdump -dS as:

   399f877a9f: jne    399f87bcf4 <_L_lock_5154>

I.e. without the + after the name of the current function, like in:

   399f877aa5: jmp    399f877ab2 <_int_free+0x412>

The browser will use that info to avoid drawing connectors to the start
of the function, since ops.target.addr was zero.

If an invalid opcode is encountered, trace-cmd exits with an error.
Instead it can be treated as a soft error where the event's print format

the parsing was successful. If not, then the error is considered soft
and the parsing of the offending event fails.

aaf045f723 perf: Have perf use the new libtraceevent.a library
The event parsing code in perf was originally copied from trace-cmd
but never was kept up-to-date with the changes that was done there.
The trace-cmd libtraceevent.a code is much more mature than what is
currently in perf.

This updates the code to use wrappers to handle the calls to the
new event parsing code. The new code requires a handle to be pass
around, which removes the global event variables and allows
more than one event structure to be read from different files
(and different machines).

But perf still has the old global events and the code throughout
perf does not yet have a nice way to pass around a handle.
A global 'pevent' has been made for perf and the old calls have
been created as wrappers to the new event parsing code that uses
the global pevent.

With this change, perf can later incorporate the pevent handle into
the perf structures and allow more than one file to be read and
compared, that contains different events.

668fe01f1c events: Update tools/lib/traceevent to work with perf
Some of the util functions of libtraceevent.a conflict with perf,
such as die(), warning() and others. Move them into event-util.h
that is not included by the perf tools.

Also, as perf compiles with 'bool' the filter_arg->bool needs to
be renamed to filter_arg->boolean.

(gdb) p dl->name
$9 = 0x2363bd0 "je"

Really strange, the code assumed that at the jump target we would have
an assembly line, but only in the previous instruction offset we have a
'lock':

(gdb) p browser->offsets[144]
$10 = (struct disasm_line *) 0x0
(gdb) p browser->offsets[142]
$11 = (struct disasm_line *) 0x27bd620
(gdb) p browser->offsets[142]->name
$12 = 0x237a8a0 "lock"
(gdb)

I'll study this more, but for now I'll just check if there is a
disasm_line at dl->ops.target, i.e. a valid jump target.

f7d82350e5 tools/events: Add files to create libtraceevent.a
Copy over the files from trace-cmd to the Linux tools directory
such that applications like perf and latencytrace can use the
more advanced parsing code.

Because some of the file names of perf conflict with trace-cmd file
names, the trace-cmd files have been renamed as follows:

 parse-events.c ==> event-parse.c
 parse-events.h ==> event-parse.h
 utils.h        ==> event-utils.h

The files have been updated to handle the changes to the header files
but other than that, they are identical to what was in the trace-cmd
repository. The history of these files, including authorship is
available at the git repo:

 git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/trace-cmd.git

The Makefile was also copied over, but most of it was removed to
focus on the parse-events code first. The parts of the Makefile for
the plugins have also been removed, but will be added back when the
plugin code is copied over as well. But that may be in its own
separate directory.

4ace73eef5 perf: Separate out trace-cmd parse-events from perf files
Move the trace-event-parse.c code that originally came from trace-cmd into
their own files. The new file will be called trace-parse-events.c, as
the name of trace-cmd's file was parse-events.c too, but it conflicted
with the parse-events.c file in perf that parses the command line.

This tries to update the code with mimimal changes.

Perf specific code stays in the trace-event-parse.[ch] files and
the common parsing code is now in trace-parse-events.c and
trace-parse-events.h.

33ff581edd perf symbols: Read plt symbols from proper symtab_type binary
When loading symbols from DSO we check multiple paths of DSO binary
until we succeed to load symbols ('.symtab' section). Once symbols are
read we try to load also plt symbols.

During the reading of plt symbols, the dso file is reopened from
location given by dso->long_name. This could be wrong in case we want
process buildid binaries.

The change is to make the plt symbols being read from the DSO path, that
normal symbols were read from.

If a '$PERF_BUILDID_DIR'(typically $HOME/.debug) is a symbolic link
directory, cutting of the path will fail.

/ # ls -al /root
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            13 Mar 26  2012 /root -> opt/home/root
/ # cd ~
/opt/home/root # perf record -a -g sleep 1
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.322 MB perf.data (~14057 samples) ]
/opt/home/root # perf archive
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
Now please run:

$ tar xvf perf.data.tar.bz2 -C ~/.debug

wherever you need to run 'perf report' on.
/opt/home/root # mkdir temp
/opt/home/root # tar xf perf.data.tar.bz2 -C ./temp
/opt/home/root # find ./temp -name "*kernel*"
./temp/opt/home/root/.debug/[kernel.kallsyms]

-> If successfully cut off the path, [kernel.kallsyms] is located
in top of the archived file.

This patch enables to cut correctly even if the buildid directory
is a symbolic link.

7fb0a5ee88 perf kvm: Finding struct machine fails for PERF_RECORD_MMAP
Running 'perf kvm --host --guest --guestmount /tmp/guestmount record -a -g -- sleep 2'

Was resulting in a segfault. For event type PERF_RECORD_MMAP,
event->ip.pid is being used in perf_session__find_machine_for_cpumode,
which is not correct.

The event->ip.pid field happens to be 0 in this case and results in
returning a NULL machine object. Finally, access to self->pid in
machine__mmap_name, results in a segfault later.

For PERF_RECORD_MMAP type, pass event->mmap.pid.

This allows comparing performance of different applications with each

Previously, the sample count was displayed against an 'Events:' heading.

Samples: 5K of event 'instructions'
Event count (approx.): 2993026545

e235f3f3bf perf ui annotate browser: Allow toggling addr offset view
The lines in objdump have this format:

    ffffffff8126543f:       jne    ffffffff81265494 <__list_del_entry+0x84>
<SNIP>
    ffffffff81265494:       mov    %rdi,%rcx

Since we now have objdump_line allowing tools to print the offset
independently from the rest of the line, allow toggling a view where
just offsets from the start of the function are shown:

     2f:       jne    ffffffff81265494 <__list_del_entry+0x84>
<SNIP>
     84:       mov    %rdi,%rcx

The offset view will be the default as soon as operations that deal with
offsets in a function are handled accodringly, i.e. in offset view the
above will become:

     2f:       jne    __list_del_entry+0x84
<SNIP>
     84:       mov    %rdi,%rcx

And then a follow up patch will allow navigating thru jumps, just like
we handle callq instructions.

31d68e7b66 perf annotate: Validate addr in symbol__inc_addr_samples
This routine was checking only if the provided address was after
sym->end, not if it was before sym->start.

Fix that by checking for both and return in both cases -ERANGE, so that
tools can communicate this to the user properly, or if they chose so, to
abort.

This problem was reported previously but the fixes involved either doing
what was being done for the > end case, i.e. silently drop the sample,
returning 0, or aborting at this function, which is in a lib (or better,
is slated to be at some point) and shouldn't abort.

The 'report' tool already checks this value and uses pr_debug to warn
the user.

This patch makes the 'top' tool check it too and warn once per map where
such range problem takes place.

8493fe1daf perf hists browser: Fix NULL deref in hists browsing code
If there's an event with no samples in data file, the perf report
command can segfault after entering the event details menu.

Following steps reproduce the issue:

 # ./perf record -e syscalls:sys_enter_kexec_load,syscalls:sys_enter_mmap ls
 # ./perf report
 # enter '0 syscalls:sys_enter_kexec_load' menu
 # pres ENTER twice

Above steps are valid assuming ls wont run kexec.. ;)

The check for sellection to be NULL is missing. The fix makes sure it's
being check. Above steps now endup with menu being displayed allowing
'Exit' as the only option.

63fa471dd4 perf hists: Catch and handle out-of-date hist entry maps.
When a process exec()'s, all the maps are retired, but we keep the hist
entries around which hold references to those outdated maps.

If the same library gets mapped in for which we have hist entries, a new
map will be created. But when we take a perf entry hit within that map,
we'll find the existing hist entry with the older map.

This causes symbol translations to be done incorrectly. For example,
the perf entry processing will lookup the correct uptodate map entry and
use that to calculate the symbol and DSO relative address. But later
when we update the histogram we'll translate the address using the
outdated map file instead leading to conditions such as out-of-range
offsets in symbol__inc_addr_samples().

Therefore, update the map of the hist_entry dynamically at lookup/
creation time.

    aldebaran:~> ll /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/format/*
    -r--r--r--. 1 root root 4096 Mar 31 10:29 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/format/any

    -r--r--r--. 1 root root 4096 Mar 31 10:29 /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/format/umask

  those lists of fields contain a specific format:

    aldebaran:~> cat /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/format/offcore_rsp
    config1:0-63

  So, those who wish to specify raw events can now use the following
  event format:

    -e cpu/cmask=1,event=2,umask=3

  Most people will not want to specify any events (let alone raw
  events), they'll just use whatever default event the tools use.

  But for more obscure PMU events that have no cross-architecture
  generic events the above syntax is more usable and a bit more
  structured than specifying hex numbers."

88c3281f7b tools turbostat: reduce measurement overhead due to IPIs
turbostat uses /dev/cpu/*/msr interface to read MSRs.
For modern systems, it reads 10 MSR/CPU. This can
be observed as 10 "Function Call Interrupts"
per CPU per sample added to /proc/interrupts.

This overhead is measurable on large idle systems,
and as Yoquan Song pointed out, it can even trick
cpuidle into thinking the system is busy.

Here turbostat re-schedules itself in-turn to each
CPU so that its MSR reads will always be local.
This replaces the 10 "Function Call Interrupts"
with a single "Rescheduling interrupt" per sample
per CPU.

On an idle 32-CPU system, this shifts some residency from
the shallow c1 state to the deeper c7 state:

ba28c59bc9 perf probe: Finder fails to resolve function name to address
If DIE entries corresponding to declarations appear before definition
entry, probe finder returns error instead of continuing to look further
for a definition entry.

This patch ensures we reach to the DIE entry corresponding to the
definition and get the function address.

fa30c964c0 perf tools: Fix bug in raw sample parsing
In perf_event__parse_sample(), the array variable was not incremented
by the amount of data used by the raw_data.

That was okay until we added PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_STACK which depends on
the array variable pointing to the beginning of the branch stack data.

But that was not the case if branch stack was combined with raw mode
sampling. That led to bogus branch stack addresses and count.

The bug would show up with:
$ perf record -R -b foo

This patch fixes the problem by correctly moving the array pointer
forward for RAW samples.

6d4818c524 perf tools: Fix display of first level of callchains
The callchain stdio mode display was written using a sorted by symbol

Fix this by handling these roots like any other branch, with the hist as

The event modifier needs to be applied only on the event definition it

The current state is that in case of multiple events definition (in

Fixing this by adding separated list for each event definition, so the

648a182c61 ktest: Allow a test to override REBOOT_ON_SUCCESS
The option REBOOT_ON_SUCCESS is global, and will have the machine reboot
the the box if all tests are successful. But a test may not want the
machine to reboot, and perhaps have the kernel it loaded be used to
install the next kernel. Or the last test may set up a kernel that the
user may want to look at. In this case, the user could have the global
option REBOOT_ON_SUCCESS be true, but if a test is defined to run at the
end, that test can override the global option and keep the kernel it
installed for the user to log in with.

Linus Torvalds
9c2b957db1 Merge branch 'perf-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull perf events changes for v3.4 from Ingo Molnar:

 - New "hardware based branch profiling" feature both on the kernel and
   the tooling side, on CPUs that support it. (modern x86 Intel CPUs
   with the 'LBR' hardware feature currently.)

   This new feature is basically a sophisticated 'magnifying glass' for
   branch execution - something that is pretty difficult to extract from
   regular, function histogram centric profiles.

   The simplest mode is activated via 'perf record -b', and the result
   looks like this in perf report:

	$ perf record -b any_call,u -e cycles:u branchy

	$ perf report -b --sort=symbol
	    52.34%  [.] main                   [.] f1
	    24.04%  [.] f1                     [.] f3
	    23.60%  [.] f1                     [.] f2
	     0.01%  [k] _IO_new_file_xsputn    [k] _IO_file_overflow
	     0.01%  [k] _IO_vfprintf_internal  [k] _IO_new_file_xsputn
	     0.01%  [k] _IO_vfprintf_internal  [k] strchrnul
	     0.01%  [k] __printf               [k] _IO_vfprintf_internal
	     0.01%  [k] main                   [k] __printf

   This output shows from/to branch columns and shows the highest
   percentage (from,to) jump combinations - i.e. the most likely taken
   branches in the system. "branches" can also include function calls
   and any other synchronous and asynchronous transitions of the
   instruction pointer that are not 'next instruction' - such as system
   calls, traps, interrupts, etc.

   This feature comes with (hopefully intuitive) flat ascii and TUI
   support in perf report.

 - Various 'perf annotate' visual improvements for us assembly junkies.
   It will now recognize function calls in the TUI and by hitting enter
   you can follow the call (recursively) and back, amongst other
   improvements.

 - Multiple threads/processes recording support in perf record, perf
   stat, perf top - which is activated via a comma-list of PIDs:

	perf top -p 21483,21485
	perf stat -p 21483,21485 -ddd
	perf record -p 21483,21485

 - Support for per UID views, via the --uid paramter to perf top, perf
   report, etc. For example 'perf top --uid mingo' will only show the
   tasks that I am running, excluding other users, root, etc.

 - Jump label restructurings and improvements - this includes the
   factoring out of the (hopefully much clearer) include/linux/static_key.h
   generic facility:

	struct static_key key = STATIC_KEY_INIT_FALSE;

	...

	if (static_key_false(&key))
	        do unlikely code
	else
	        do likely code

	...
	static_key_slow_inc();
	...
	static_key_slow_inc();
	...

   The static_key_false() branch will be generated into the code with as
   little impact to the likely code path as possible. the
   static_key_slow_*() APIs flip the branch via live kernel code patching.

   This facility can now be used more widely within the kernel to
   micro-optimize hot branches whose likelihood matches the static-key
   usage and fast/slow cost patterns.

 - SW function tracer improvements: perf support and filtering support.

 - Various hardenings of the perf.data ABI, to make older perf.data's
   smoother on newer tool versions, to make new features integrate more
   smoothly, to support cross-endian recording/analyzing workflows
   better, etc.

 - Restructuring of the kprobes code, the splitting out of 'optprobes',
   and a corner case bugfix.

 - Allow the tracing of kernel console output (printk).

 - Improvements/fixes to user-space RDPMC support, allowing user-space
   self-profiling code to extract PMU counts without performing any
   system calls, while playing nice with the kernel side.

 - 'perf bench' improvements

 - ... and lots of internal restructurings, cleanups and fixes that made
   these features possible. And, as usual this list is incomplete as
   there were also lots of other improvements

c31a945705 perf report: Add a simple GTK2-based 'perf report' browser
This patch adds a simple GTK2-based browser to 'perf report' that's
based on the TTY-based browser in builtin-report.c.

To launch "perf report" using the new GTK interface just type:

  $ perf report --gtk

The interface is somewhat limited in features at the moment:

  - No callgraph support

  - No KVM guest profiling support

  - No color coding for percentages

  - No sorting from the UI

  - ..and many, many more!

That said, I think this patch a reasonable start to build future features on.

5f537a2659 perf tools: Add support to specify pmu style event
Added new event rule to the event definition grammar:

event_def: event_pmu |
           ...
event_pmu: PE_NAME '/' event_config '/'

Using this rule, event could be now specified like:
  cpu/config=1,config1=2,config2=3/u

where pmu name 'cpu' is looked up via following path:
  ${sysfs_mount}/bus/event_source/devices/${pmu}

and config options are bound to the pmu's format definiton:
  ${sysfs_mount}/bus/event_source/devices/${pmu}/format

The hardcoded config options still stays and have precedence
over any format field defined with same name.

cd82a32e99 perf tools: Add perf pmu object to access pmu format definition
Adding pmu object which provides interface to pmu's sysfs
event format definition located at:
  ${sysfs_mount}/bus/event_source/devices/${pmu}/format

Following interface is exported:
  struct perf_pmu* perf_pmu__find(char *name);
  - this function returns pmu object, which is then
    passed as a handle to other interface functions

  int perf_pmu__config(struct perf_pmu *pmu, struct perf_event_attr *attr,
                       struct list_head *head_terms);
  - this function configures perf_event_attr struct based
    on pmu's format definitions and config terms data,
    containined in head_terms list.

Parser generator is used to retrive the pmu's format definition.
The generated parser is part of the patch. Added makefile rule
'pmu-parser' to generate the parser code out of the bison/flex
sources.

Added builtin test 'Test perf pmu format parsing', which could
be run like:
	perf test pmu

8f707d843c perf tools: Add config options support for event parsing
Adding a new rule to the event grammar to be able to specify
values of additional attributes of symbolic event.

The new syntax for event symbolic definition is:

event_legacy_symbol:  PE_NAME_SYM '/' event_config '/' |
                      PE_NAME_SYM sep_slash_dc

event_config:         event_config ',' event_term | event_term

event_term:           PE_NAME '=' PE_NAME |
                      PE_NAME '=' PE_VALUE
                      PE_NAME

sep_slash_dc: '/' | ':' |

At the moment the config options are hardcoded to be used for legacy
symbol events to define several perf_event_attr fields. It is:

  'config'   to define perf_event_attr::config
  'config1'  to define perf_event_attr::config1
  'config2'  to define perf_event_attr::config2
  'period'   to define perf_event_attr::sample_period

Legacy events could be now specified as:
  cycles/period=100000/

If term is specified without the value assignment, then 1 is
assigned by default.

eae7a755ee perf tools, x86: Build perf on older user-space as well
On ancient systems I get this build failure:

The reason is that this old system does not have the split
unistd.h headers yet, from which to pick up the syscall
definitions.

Add the syscall numbers to the already existing i386 and x86_64

With this patch perf builds and works fine on 5 years old

e7f01d1e3d perf tools: Use scnprintf where applicable
Several places were expecting that the value returned was the number of
characters printed, not what would be printed if there was space.

Fix it by using the scnprintf and vscnprintf variants we inherited from

Some corner cases where the number of printed characters were not
accounted were fixed too.

b832796caa perf tools: Incorrect use of snprintf results in SEGV
I have a workload where perf top scribbles over the stack and we SEGV.
What makes it interesting is that an snprintf is causing this.

The workload is a c++ gem that has method names over 3000 characters
long, but snprintf is designed to avoid overrunning buffers. So what
went wrong?

The problem is we assume snprintf returns the number of characters
written:

    ret += repsep_snprintf(bf + ret, size - ret, "[%c] ", self->level);
...
    ret += repsep_snprintf(bf + ret, size - ret, "%s", self->ms.sym->name);

Unfortunately this is not how snprintf works. snprintf returns the
number of characters that would have been written if there was enough
space. In the above case, if the first snprintf returns a value larger
than size, we pass a negative size into the second snprintf and happily
scribble over the stack. If you have 3000 character c++ methods thats a
lot of stack to trample.

This patch fixes repsep_snprintf by clamping the value at size - 1 which
is the maximum snprintf can write before adding the NULL terminator.

I get the sinking feeling that there are a lot of other uses of snprintf
that have this same bug, we should audit them all.

8aa8a7c80c perf record: Fix buffer overrun bug in tracepoint_id_to_path()
This patch fixes a buffer overrun bug in
tracepoint_id_to_path(). The bug manisfested itself as a memory
error reported by perf record. I ran into it with perf sched:

 $ perf sched rec noploop 2 noploop for 2 seconds
 [ perf record: Woken up 14 times to write data ]
 [ perf record: Captured and wrote 42.701 MB perf.data (~1865622 samples) ]
 Fatal: No memory to alloc tracepoints list

It turned out that tracepoint_id_to_path() was reading the
tracepoint id using read() but the buffer was not large enough
to include the \n terminator for id with 4 digits or more.

The patch fixes the problem by extending the buffer to a more
reasonable size covering all possible id length include \n
terminator. Note that atoll() stops at the first non digit
character, thus it is not necessary to clear the buffer between
each read.

114382a0ae perf tools: Make perf able to read files from older ABIs
This patches provides a way to handle legacy perf.data
files. Legacy files are those using the older PERFFILE
signature.

For those, it is still necessary to detect endianness but
without comparing their header->attr_size with the
tool's own version as it may be different. Instead, we use
a reference table for all known sizes from the legacy era.

We try all the combinations for sizes and endianness. If we find
a match, we proceed, otherwise we return: "incompatible file
format".

This is also done for the pipe-mode file format.

69996df486 perf tools: Enable reading of perf.data files from different ABI rev
This patch allows perf to process perf.data files generated
using an ABI that has a different perf_event_attr struct size,
i.e., a different ABI version.

The perf_event_attr can be extended, yet perf needs to cope with
older perf.data files. Similarly, perf must be able to cope with
a perf.data file which is using a newer version of the ABI than
what it knows about.

This patch adds read_attr(), a routine that reads a
perf_event_attr struct from a file incrementally based on its
advertised size. If the on-file struct is smaller than what perf
knows, then the extra fields are zeroed. If the on-file struct
is bigger, then perf only uses what it knows about, the rest is
skipped.

b50311dc2a perf report: Add support for taken branch sampling
This patch adds support for taken branch sampling, i.e, the
PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_STACK feature to perf report. In other
words, to display histograms based on taken branches rather
than executed instructions addresses.

The new option is called -b and it takes no argument. To
generate meaningful output, the perf.data must have been
obtained using perf record -b xxx ... where xxx is a branch
filter option.

The output shows symbols, modules, sorted by 'who branches
where' the most often. The percentages reported in the first
column refer to the total number of branches captured and
not the usual number of samples.

Here is a quick example.
Here branchy is simple test program which looks as follows:

void f2(void)
{}
void f3(void)
{}
void f1(unsigned long n)
{
  if (n & 1UL)
    f2();
  else
    f3();
}
int main(void)
{
  unsigned long i;

  for (i=0; i < N; i++)
   f1(i);
  return 0;
}

Here is the output captured on Nehalem, if we are
only interested in user level function calls.

$ perf record -b any_call,u -e cycles:u branchy

$ perf report -b --sort=symbol
    52.34%  [.] main                   [.] f1
    24.04%  [.] f1                     [.] f3

     0.01%  [k] main                   [k] __printf

About half (52%) of the call branches captured are from main()
-> f1(). The second half (24%+23%) is split in two equal shares
between f1() -> f2(), f1() ->f3(). The output is as expected
given the code.

It should be noted, that using -b in perf record does not
eliminate information in the perf.data file. Consequently, a
typical profile can also be obtained by perf report by simply
not using its -b option.

It is possible to sort on branch related columns:

   - dso_from, symbol_from
   - dso_to, symbol_to
   - mispredict

bdfebd848f perf record: Add support for sampling taken branch
This patch adds a new option to enable taken branch stack
sampling, i.e., leverage the PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_STACK feature
of perf_events.

There is a new option to active this mode: -b.
It is possible to pass a set of filters to select the type of
branches to sample.

The following filters are available:

 - any : any type of branches
 - any_call : any function call or system call
 - any_ret : any function return or system call return
 - any_ind : any indirect branch
 - u: only when the branch target is at the user level
 - k: only when the branch target is in the kernel
 - hv: only when the branch target is in the hypervisor

Filters can be combined by passing a comma separated list
to the option:

$ perf record -b any_call,u -e cycles:u branchy

41c21a6830 perf evlist: Restore original errno after open failed
If perf_evsel__open() failed, the errno was set and returned properly.

However since the perf_evlist__open() called close() on fd's for all of
evsel x cpu x thread after the failure, the errno was overridden by
other code (EBADF). So the caller of the function ended up seeing
different error message and getting confused.

Fit it by restoring original return value. Because one of caller of the
function is in the python extension, and it uses system errno
internally, it'd be better restoring the original value rather than
using the return value of the function directly, IMHO (i.e. I'm not a
python expert :)

f9b0f51709 This merge is rather big. Here's what it contains:
For am5536udc we have just simple coding style fixes. Nothing that has any
 potential to cause any issues going forward.

 With mv_udc, there's only one single change removing an unneeded NULL check.

 at91_udc also only saw a single change this merge window, and that's only
 removing a duplicated header.

 The Renesas controller has a few more involved changes. Support for SUDMAC was
 added, there's now a special handling of IRQ resources for when the IRQ line is
 shared between Renesas controller and SUDMAC, we also had a bug fix where
 Renesas controller would sleep in atomic context while doing DMA transfers from
 a tasklet. There were also a set of minor cleanups.

 The FSL UDC also had a scheduling in atomic context bug fix, but that's all.

 Thanks to Sebastian, the dummy_hcd now works better than ever with support for
 scatterlists and streams. Sebastian also added SuperSpeed descriptors to the
 serial gadgets.

 The highlight on this merge is the addition of a generic API for mapping and
 unmapping usb_requests. This will avoid code duplication on all UDC controllers
 and also kills all the defines for DMA_ADDR_INVALID which UDC controllers
 sprinkled around. A few of the UDC controllers were already converted to use
 this new API.

Merge tag 'gadget-for-v3.4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/balbi/usb into usb-next

USB: Gadget: changes for 3.4

This merge is rather big.
