kexec: load and relocate purgatory at kernel load time
Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location. Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory relocation code in kexec-tools. Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in purgatory. Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent bootloaders can make use of it. Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of second kernel etc. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Cc: Eric Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Cc: H. arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate area
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. rtc: ia64: allow other architectures to use EFI RTC
Currently, the rtc-efi driver is restricted to ia64 only. Newer architectures with EFI support may want to also use that driver. Here are the PPC and ARM changes for KVM, which I separated because
they had small conflicts (respectively within KVM documentation, and with 3.16-rc changes). Since they were all within the subsystem, I took care of them. Stephen Rothwell reported some snags in PPC builds, but they are all fixed now; the latest linux-next report was clean. New features for ARM include: - KVM VGIC v2 emulation on GICv3 hardware - Big-Endian support for arm/arm64 (guest and host) - Debug Architecture support for arm64 (arm32 is on Christoffer's todo list) And for PPC: - Book3S: Good number of LE host fixes, enable HV on LE - Book3S HV: Add in-guest debug support This release drops support for KVM on the PPC440. As a result, the PPC merge removes more lines than it adds. :) I also included an x86 change, since Davidlohr tied it to an independent bug report and the reporter quickly provided a Tested-by; there was no reason to wait for -rc2. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABAgAGBQJT4iIJAAoJEBvWZb6bTYbyZqoP/3Wxy8NWPFJ8HGt81NHlGnDS a9UbL7EibcOEG+aaKqmtBglTD5YDiGBDNCxxiSJaDHt+grLN4fsWIliJob1nJFoO 90f89EWN2XjeCrJXA5nUoeg5tpc5OoYKsiP6pTgzIwkP8vvs/H1+zpcTS/UmYsr/ qipVMMsM+zZeHWZcSbqjW88z7YqIn1sr5282wJ85cbyv4KGizb/G4dyPuDqLb6np hkAD8Ah6VV2suQ2FSy7G2fg20R0vglUi60hkEHLoCBPVqJCl7SmC8MvxNbjBnP8S J36R0R0u1wHYKzAGooLJGVOZ/o/gSiVqKX+++L2EvJBN+kuA6u/7fxLyBT+LwDAE IF/Aln5rpg1fe+eywvhz86WljTVEQ8bO1zVsIQUPY+/ZOPedZHMwyvXft8ogbjSp 2m9OJ/3e8Aggh0OeHpCDoeow+QDUXvX0YdCw+2Yh0p+7VMXqkyp0QEiBu38jrusC rB3VNifJbDSWLKdG9LfCAPHnxZD2XYEwv2WFBo6KQOGMGHfx0GXpCOL/jQihrhA6 HtEG5Bs3lvnHQemdpUZ58xojiABbMaUPdcnPXQQEp23WhZzrfLMLzqVG0VYnhSsC 9pi7MJj8c31rqx5WU2oRM28i/BvNxN0NCtkDpineO5s3f89Ws1xnwxqlm38AKP0J irJQTYFEqec+GM9JK1rG =hyQP -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm Pull second round of KVM changes from Paolo Bonzini: "Here are the PPC and ARM changes for KVM, which I separated because they had small conflicts (respectively within KVM documentation, and with 3.16-rc changes). Merge branch 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull timer and time updates from Thomas Gleixner: "A rather large update of timers, timekeeping & co - Core timekeeping code is year-2038 safe now for 32bit machines. Now we just need to fix all in kernel users and the gazillion of user space interfaces which rely on timespec/timeval :) - Better cache layout for the timekeeping internal data structures. - Proper nanosecond based interfaces for in kernel users. - Tree wide cleanup of code which wants nanoseconds but does hoops and loops to convert back and forth from timespecs. Some of it definitely belongs into the ugly code museum. - Consolidation of the timekeeping interface zoo. - A fast NMI safe accessor to clock monotonic for tracing. This is a long standing request to support correlated user/kernel space traces. With proper NTP frequency correction it's also suitable for correlation of traces accross separate machines. - Checkpoint/restart support for timerfd. - A few NOHZ[_FULL] improvements in the [hr]timer code. - Code move from kernel to kernel/time of all time* related code. - New clocksource/event drivers from the ARM universe. I'm really impressed that despite an architected timer in the newer chips SoC manufacturers insist on inventing new and differently broken SoC specific timers. [ Ed. "Impressed"? I don't think that word means what you think it means ] - Another round of code move from arch to drivers. Looks like most of the legacy mess in ARM regarding timers is sorted out except for a few obnoxious strongholds. - The usual updates and fixlets all over the place" * 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (114 commits) timekeeping: Fixup typo in update_vsyscall_old definition clocksource: document some basic timekeeping concepts timekeeping: Use cached ntp_tick_length when accumulating error timekeeping: Rework frequency adjustments to work better w/ nohz timekeeping: Minor fixup for timespec64->timespec assignment ftrace: Provide trace clocks monotonic timekeeping: Provide fast and NMI safe access to CLOCK_MONOTONIC seqcount: Add raw_write_seqcount_latch() seqcount: Provide raw_read_seqcount() timekeeping: Use tk_read_base as argument for timekeeping_get_ns() timekeeping: Create struct tk_read_base and use it in struct timekeeper timekeeping: Restructure the timekeeper some more clocksource: Get rid of cycle_last clocksource: Move cycle_last validation to core code clocksource: Make delta calculation a function wireless: ath9k: Get rid of timespec conversions drm: vmwgfx: Use nsec based interfaces drm: i915: Use nsec based interfaces timekeeping: Provide ktime_get_raw() hangcheck-timer: Use ktime_get_ns() ... |

KVM: Give IRQFD its own separate enabling Kconfig option
Currently, the IRQFD code is conditional on CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING. So that we can have the IRQFD code compiled in without having the IRQ routing code, this creates a new CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQFD, makes the IRQFD code conditional on it instead of CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING, and makes all the platforms that currently select HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING also select HAVE_KVM_IRQFD. The nasid_to_try variable is an array of integers, so plain integers can be used when assigning values to the elements rather than casting a NULL pointer to an integer, which results in the following warning from GCC: arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:117:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:125:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ Replace (int)NULL with a simple 0 to silence these warnings. The code uses a the following to zero out a PDA: memset(pda, 0, sizeof(pda)); But sizeof(pda) will return the size of a pointer rather than the size of the structure pointed to. ACPI / processor: Introduce ARCH_MIGHT_HAVE_ACPI_PDC
The use of _PDC is deprecated in ACPI 3.0 in favor of _OSC, as ARM platform is supported only in ACPI 5.0 or higher version, _PDC will not be used in ARM platform, so make Make _PDC only for platforms with Intel CPUs. Introduce ARCH_MIGHT_HAVE_ACPI_PDC and move _PDC related code in ACPI processor driver into a single file processor_pdc.c, make x86 and ia64 select it when ACPI is enabled. This patch also use pr_* to replace printk to fix the checkpatch warning and factor acpi_processor_alloc_pdc() a little bit to avoid duplicate pr_err() code. ACPI: Don't use acpi_lapic in ACPI core code
Now ARM64 support is being added to ACPI so architecture specific values can not be used in core ACPI code. Following on the patch "ACPI / processor: Check if LAPIC is present during initialization" which uses acpi_lapic in acpi_processor.c, on ARM64 platform, GIC is used instead of local APIC, so acpi_lapic is not a suitable value for ARM64. What is actually important at this point is if there is/are CPU entry/entries (Local APIC/SAPIC, GICC) in MADT, so introduce acpi_has_cpu_in_madt() to be arch specific and generic. This is odd to use early_iounmap() function do tear down mapping created by early_memremap() function, even if it works right now, because they belong to different set of functions. kbuild: allow to override Python command name
The specification of Python 3 is largely different from that of Python 2. For example, arch/ia64/scripts/unwcheck.py seems to be written in Python 2, not compatible with Python 3. It is not a good idea to invoke python scripts with the hard-coded command name 'python'. The command 'python' could possibly be Python 3 on some systems. For that case, it is reasonable to allow to override the command name by giving 'PYTHON=python2' from the command line. The 'python' in arch/ia64/Makefile should be replaced with '$(PYTHON)'. mm: disable zone_reclaim_mode by default
When it was introduced, zone_reclaim_mode made sense as NUMA distances punished and workloads were generally partitioned to fit into a NUMA node. NUMA machines are now common but few of the workloads are NUMA-aware and it's routine to see major performance degradation due to zone_reclaim_mode being enabled but relatively few can identify the problem. Those that require zone_reclaim_mode are likely to be able to detect when it needs to be enabled and tune appropriately so lets have a sensible default for the bulk of users. This patch (of 2): zone_reclaim_mode causes processes to prefer reclaiming memory from local node instead of spilling over to other nodes. This made sense initially when NUMA machines were almost exclusively HPC and the workload was partitioned into nodes. The NUMA penalties were sufficiently high to justify reclaiming the memory. On current machines and workloads it is often the case that zone_reclaim_mode destroys performance but not all users know how to detect this. Favour the common case and disable it by default. Users that are sophisticated enough to know they need zone_reclaim_mode will detect it. hugetlb: restrict hugepage_migration_support() to x86_64
Currently hugepage migration is available for all archs which support pmd-level hugepage, but testing is done only for x86_64 and there're bugs for other archs. So to avoid breaking such archs, this patch limits the availability strictly to x86_64 until developers of other archs get interested in enabling this feature. Simply disabling hugepage migration on non-x86_64 archs is not enough to fix the reported problem where sys_move_pages() hits the BUG_ON() in follow_page(FOLL_GET), so let's fix this by checking if hugepage migration is supported in vma_migratable(). We have no major new features this time, but there are a few significant changes of how things work. The most visible one will probably be that we are now going to create platform devices rather than PNP devices by default for ACPI device objects with _HID. That was long overdue and will be really necessary to be able to use the same drivers for the same hardware blocks on ACPI and DT-based systems going forward. We're not expecting fallout from this one (as usual), but it's something to watch nevertheless. The second change having a chance to be visible is that ACPI video will now default to using native backlight rather than the ACPI backlight interface which should generally help systems with broken Win8 BIOSes. We're hoping that all problems with the native backlight handling that we had previously have been addressed and we are in a good enough shape to flip the default, but this change should be easy enough to revert if need be. In addition to that, the system suspend core has a new mechanism to allow runtime-suspended devices to stay suspended throughout system suspend/resume transitions if some extra conditions are met (generally, they are related to coordination within device hierarchy). However, enabling this feature requires cooperation from the bus type layer and for now it has only been implemented for the ACPI PM domain (used by ACPI-enumerated platform devices mostly today). Also, the acpidump utility that was previously shipped as a separate tool will now be provided by the upstream ACPICA along with the rest of ACPICA code, which will allow it to be more up to date and better supported, and we have one new cpuidle driver (ARM clps711x). The rest is improvements related to certain specific use cases, cleanups and fixes all over the place. Specifics: - ACPICA update to upstream version 20140424. That includes a number of fixes and improvements related to things like GPE handling, table loading, headers, memory mapping and unmapping, DSDT/SSDT overriding, and the Unload() operator. Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar: "The main scheduling related changes in this cycle were: - various sched/numa updates, for better performance - tree wide cleanup of open coded nice levels - nohz fix related to rq->nr_running use - cpuidle changes and continued consolidation to improve the kernel/sched/idle.c high level idle scheduling logic. As part of this effort I pulled cpuidle driver changes from Rafael as well. - standardized idle polling amongst architectures - continued work on preparing better power/energy aware scheduling - sched/rt updates - misc fixlets and cleanups" * 'sched-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (49 commits) sched/numa: Decay ->wakee_flips instead of zeroing sched/numa: Update migrate_improves/degrades_locality() sched/numa: Allow task switch if load imbalance improves sched/rt: Fix 'struct sched_dl_entity' and dl_task_time() comments, to match the current upstream code sched: Consolidate open coded implementations of nice level frobbing into nice_to_rlimit() and rlimit_to_nice() sched: Initialize rq->age_stamp on processor start sched, nohz: Change rq->nr_running to always use wrappers sched: Fix the rq->next_balance logic in rebalance_domains() and idle_balance() sched: Use clamp() and clamp_val() to make sys_nice() more readable sched: Do not zero sg->cpumask and sg->sgp->power in build_sched_groups() sched/numa: Fix initialization of sched_domain_topology for NUMA sched: Call select_idle_sibling() when not affine_sd sched: Simplify return logic in sched_read_attr() sched: Simplify return logic in sched_copy_attr() sched: Fix exec_start/task_hot on migrated tasks arm64: Remove TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG metag: Remove TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG sched/idle: Make cpuidle_idle_call() void sched/idle: Reflow cpuidle_idle_call() sched/idle: Delay clearing the polling bit ... |

USB driver patches for 3.16-rc1
Here is the big USB driver pull request for 3.16-rc1. Nothing huge here, but lots of little things in the USB core, and in lots of drivers. Hopefully the USB power management will be work better now that it has been reworked to do per-port power control dynamically. There's also a raft of gadget driver updates and fixes, CONFIG_USB_DEBUG is finally gone now that everything has been converted over to the dynamic debug inteface, the last hold-out drivers were cleaned up and the config option removed. There were also other minor things all through the drivers/usb/ tree, the shortlog shows this pretty well. All have been in linux-next, including the very last patch, which came from linux-next to fix a build issue on some platforms.
