ADR-0001: Electron desktop shell

Status: accepted

Context

The workbench needs a rich, long-lived desktop UI with WebGL graph rendering. The realistic choices were Tauri v2 and Electron. The team is solo with heavy agent assistance, so ecosystem maturity and predictable packaging dominate.

Decision

Use Electron as the desktop shell, with a React renderer.

Consequences

Mature tooling, abundant examples, and straightforward Node-side process management for spawning the Rust core sidecar.
Larger footprint than Tauri; accepted as a tradeoff.
Native Node addons are avoided elsewhere (see ADR-0002), so Electron's ABI churn does not affect the analysis core.

Alternatives considered

Tauri v2 — smaller binaries, Rust-native shell; rejected by explicit preference in favour of Electron's ecosystem.
Web-only app — rejected: no local process/container supervision.
