Just following up on the emails with Timothy on this issue. This is the same problem I am having. The installer never comes back with the completed splash screen, but it does spawn 3 background AnythingLLM processes that are all pointing to the same AnythingLLM file located in C:\Users...\AppData\Local\Programs\anythingllm-desktop directory. They are consuming memory resources but no CPU or network. So, am wondering if there is a way to run the installer in a verbose manner so I/we can see where things stop.

To start the app in "debug" is just executing the app from powershell. C:\Users\<usr>\AppData\Local\Program\anythingllm-desktop\anythingllm-desktop.exe

Running that should start the app as normal, but then print all the logs to the terminal window. I am very curious why this happens to a subset of people and being windows, but gut feeling is its permissions/folder related.

Hi Timothy,

Good news (at least for now): It is working! The final change that I made was to turn off my VPN, and it worked. I tried adding the AnythingLLM.exe and the LMStudio.exe to the bypass list, and so far so good...

So, thank you, Timothy, for the quick responses! Am looking forward to more features and data connectors...

When you turned off your VPN the app booted correctly? 🤔 That is a weird behavior ill just have to note because we dont do any pre-run install or pulling of anything when booting so I wonder why it got blocked?

Hi Timothy,

Yes, that seems to have been the secret sauce, but in all candor, all I can
say is that that was the last thing I tried. I also changed the permissions
on the AppData directory and made allowances on my virus scanner for it,
too (I must really want this app! lol.), and I have yet to have the time to
do any re-config/testing. Earlier today, I had an issue restarting the
connection to the LMstudio server, but I don't think that's your issue. It
is all up and running now.

You know, what really threw me away was how the installation process didn't
follow the progression on the site. The installer would run and then
promptly go away. I expected to see a panel indicating the installation had
finished, but that never showed up. So, when I couldn't get the app to
launch a foreground process, I just figured the whole installation was
hosed. My one suggestion is to have an option to see what's going on behind
the scenes with the installer (verbose mode option?) That way the user has
some idea of what's going on. On this point, because I think it's important
in that it clears the VPN issues from being involved from any installer
deviations, I did the update, and it ran the same way, but it seemed to
work, and I am up on the 1.2.1 rev.

That's been my experience so far, and I have been able to load docs and
URLs and embed them (I guess that means that memgpt would be superfluous?).
If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know. I'm not a
programmer, but I have many years of UNIX SysAdmin and DBA experience (ret.)

Til later,

Dave
