How are you running AnythingLLM?

AnythingLLM desktop app

What happened?

I have been having this issue for probably 7+ months. Every time a new AntyhingLLM desktop app is released and I try to update, the installer will stop about 1/5 through the process, always at the very same point, and ask me to close any running instances of AnythingLLM (of which are none). I will make sure that both running processes and such in the background, including Ollama, are checked again and closed, it will retry and stop exactly at the same point at the installer's process, asking the same. I have gone through similar Github threads from 2025 that don't address the issue (also AnythningLLM's team claims in some to not be able to reproduce this behavior). The AnythingLLM desktop app has an AppData folder which can be deleted, but in my case this isn't necessary (after uninstallation it still remains there) as upon uninstalling, the new app instance will be able to finish the process.

I kept ignoring this need for uninstall every time an update is pushed, but on the previous update I installed a model for specific agentic activities and it is not in the AppData folder so I don't want to go through the process of installing dependencies again. And this is not supposed to be this way anyway.

Could you please let me know what is causing this behavior and how I can address it. I have been using the desktop app on Windows for more than a year and never had issues with updates until possibly August 2025 where "the app is open and must be closed before the installer can continue" sort of message prevents updates. No matter if these are run as an admin or not. Windows 11 25H2. Thank you in advance.

Are there known steps to reproduce?

Windows, normal installation with folder of own choice. Installer goes through its default settings (apart from the aforementioned folder of choice), then completes normally and the app works as expected. However, as far as the app has been installed once, on the next update it will correctly sense its installation directory and get stuck about 1/5 through the installation process reporting it couldn't continue since the app is in use (which it isn't, nor are there any background processes - I always terminate them before update manually).

LLM Provider & Model (if applicable)

Ollama used locally served via cmd. Not applicable to the problem described.

Embedder Provider & Model (if applicable)

@timothycarambat commented on GitHub (Apr 24, 2026):

Then this would mean 7 months ago you accidentally installed as "All users" and should have been "just this user"

We removed the all user option a while ago, so that old one needs to be uninstalled: https://docs.anythingllm.com/installation-desktop/windows#anythingllm-cannot-be-closed-when-trying-to-install
