cebf3467bc Remove the BBVectorize pass.
It served us well, helped kick-start much of the vectorization efforts
in LLVM, etc. Its time has come and past. Back in 2014:
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2014-November/079091.html

Time to actually let go and move forward. =]

I've updated the release notes both about the removal and the
deprecation of the corresponding C API.

17dcd3dc69 Only unswitch loops with uniform conditions
Loop unswitching can be extremely harmful for a SIMT target. In case
if hoisted condition is not uniform a SIMT machine will execute both
clones of a loop sequentially. Therefor LoopUnswitch checks if the
condition is non-divergent.

Since DivergenceAnalysis adds an expensive PostDominatorTree analysis
not needed for non-SIMT targets a new option is added to avoid unneded
analysis initialization. The method getAnalysisUsage is called when
TargetTransformInfo is not yet available and we cannot use it here.
For that reason a new field DivergentTarget is added to PassManagerBuilder
to control the behavior and set this field from a target.

03ef7f1eec Move whole-program virtual call optimization pass after function attribute inference in LTO pipeline.
As a result of D18634 we no longer infer certain attributes on linkonce_odr
functions at compile time, and may only infer them at LTO time. The readnone
attribute in particular is required for virtual constant propagation (part
of whole-program virtual call optimization) to work correctly.

This change moves the whole-program virtual call optimization pass after
the function attribute inference passes, and enables the attribute inference
passes at opt level 1, so that virtual constant propagation has a chance to
work correctly for linkonce_odr functions.

e152c1527d InstCombine: Restrict computeKnownBits() on all Values to OptLevel > 2
As part of r251146 InstCombine was extended to call computeKnownBits on
every value in the function to determine whether it happens to be
constant. This increases typical compiletime by 1-3% (5% in irgen+opt
time) in my measurements. On the other hand this case did not trigger
once in the whole llvm-testsuite.

This patch introduces the notion of ExpensiveCombines which are only
enabled for OptLevel > 2. I removed the check in InstructionSimplify as
that is called from various places where the OptLevel is not known but
given the rarity of the situation I think a check in InstCombine is
enough.

f5146973a3 Define the ThinLTO Pipeline (experimental)
Summary:
On the contrary to Full LTO, ThinLTO can afford to shift compile time
from the frontend to the linker: both phases are parallel (even if
it is not totally "free": projects like clang are reusing product
from the "compile phase" for multiple link, think about
libLLVMSupport reused for opt, llc, etc.).

This pipeline is based on the proposal in D13443 for full LTO. We
didn't move forward on this proposal because the LTO link was far too
long after that. We believe that we can afford it with ThinLTO.

The ThinLTO pipeline integrates in the regular O2/O3 flow:

 - The compile phase perform the inliner with a somehow lighter
function simplification. (TODO: tune the inliner thresholds here)
This is intendend to simplify the IR and get rid of obvious things
like linkonce_odr that will be inlined.
 - The link phase will run the pipeline from the start, extended with
some specific passes that leverage the augmented knowledge we have
during LTO. Especially after the inliner is done, a sequence of
globalDCE/globalOpt is performed, followed by another run of the
"function simplification" passes. It is not clear if this part
of the pipeline will stay as is, as the split model of ThinLTO
does not allow the same benefit as FullLTO without added tricks.

The measurements on the public test suite as well as on our internal
suite show an overall net improvement. The binary size for the clang
executable is reduced by 5%. We're still tuning it with the bringup
of ThinLTO and it will evolve, but this should provide a good starting
point.

40cd497a24 WholeProgramDevirt: introduce.
This pass implements whole program optimization of virtual calls in cases
where we know (via bitset information) that the list of callees is fixed. This
includes the following:

- Single implementation devirtualization: if a virtual call has a single
possible callee, replace all calls with a direct call to that callee.

- Virtual constant propagation: if the virtual function's return type is an
integer <=64 bits and all possible callees are readnone, for each class and
each list of constant arguments: evaluate the function, store the return
value alongside the virtual table, and rewrite each virtual call as a load
  from the virtual table.

- Uniform return value optimization: if the conditions for virtual constant
propagation hold and each function returns the same constant value, replace
each virtual call with that constant.

- Unique return value optimization for i1 return values: if the conditions
for virtual constant propagation hold and a single vtable's function
returns 0, or a single vtable's function returns 1, replace each virtual
call with a comparison of the vptr against that vtable's address.

3d41fcb3da Resubmit "Add new EliminateAvailableExternally module pass" (r239480)
This change includes a fix for https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=499508#c3,
which required updating the visibility for symbols with eliminated definitions.

--Original Commit Message--

Add new EliminateAvailableExternally module pass, which is performed in
O2 compiles just before GlobalDCE, unless we are preparing for LTO.

This pass eliminates available externally globals (turning them into
declarations), regardless of whether they are dead/unreferenced, since
we are guaranteed to have a copy available elsewhere at link time.
This enables additional opportunities for GlobalDCE.

If we are preparing for LTO (e.g. a -flto -c compile), the pass is not
included as we want to preserve available externally functions for possible
link time inlining. The FE indicates whether we are doing an -flto compile
via the new PrepareForLTO flag on the PassManagerBuilder.

416d8ecf80 libLTO, llvm-lto, gold: Introduce flag for controlling optimization level.
This change also introduces a link-time optimization level of 1. This
optimization level runs only the globaldce pass as well as cleanup passes for
passes that run at -O0, specifically simplifycfg which cleans up lowerbitsets.

0dda07ad4d PassManagerBuilder: Remove effectively dead 'StripDebug' option
`StripDebug` was only used by tools/opt/opt.cpp in
`AddStandardLinkPasses()`, but opt.cpp adds the same pass based on its
command-line flag before it calls `AddStandardLinkPasses()`. Stripping
debug info twice isn't very useful.

417c5c172c [PM] Remove the old 'PassManager.h' header file at the top level of
LLVM's include tree and the use of using declarations to hide the
'legacy' namespace for the old pass manager.

This undoes the primary modules-hostile change I made to keep
out-of-tree targets building. I sent an email inquiring about whether
this would be reasonable to do at this phase and people seemed fine with
it, so making it a reality. This should allow us to start bootstrapping
with modules to a certain extent along with making it easier to mix and
match headers in general.

The updates to any code for users of LLVM are very mechanical. Switch
from including "llvm/PassManager.h" to "llvm/IR/LegacyPassManager.h".
Qualify the types which now produce compile errors with "legacy::". The
most common ones are "PassManager", "PassManagerBase", and
"FunctionPassManager".

b4a44570f6 [PM] Sink the population of the pass manager with target-specific
analyses back into the LTO code generator.

The pass manager builder (and the transforms library in general)
shouldn't be referencing the target machine at all.

This makes the LTO population work like the others -- the data layout
and target transform info need to be pre-populated.

6f409cbc05 [PM] Rework how the TargetLibraryInfo pass integrates with the new pass
manager to support the actual uses of it. =]

When I ported instcombine to the new pass manager I discover that it
didn't work because TLI wasn't available in the right places. This is
a somewhat surprising and/or subtle aspect of the new pass manager
design that came up before but I think is useful to be reminded of:

While the new pass manager *allows* a function pass to query a module
analysis, it requires that the module analysis is already run and cached
prior to the function pass manager starting up, possibly with
a 'require<foo>' style utility in the pass pipeline. This is an
intentional hurdle because using a module analysis from a function pass
*requires* that the module analysis is run prior to entering the
function pass manager. Otherwise the other functions in the module could
be in who-knows-what state, etc.

A somewhat surprising consequence of this design decision (at least to
me) is that you have to design a function pass that leverages
a module analysis to do so as an optional feature. Even if that means
your function pass does no work in the absence of the module analysis,
you have to handle that possibility and remain conservatively correct.
This is a natural consequence of things being able to invalidate the
module analysis and us being unable to re-run it. And it's a generally
good thing because it lets us reorder passes arbitrarily without
breaking correctness, etc.

This ends up causing problems in one case. What if we have a module
analysis that is *definitionally* impossible to invalidate. In the
places this might come up, the analysis is usually also definitionally
trivial to run even while other transformation passes run on the module,
regardless of the state of anything. And so, it follows that it is
natural to have a hard requirement on such analyses from a function
pass.

It turns out, that TargetLibraryInfo is just such an analysis, and
InstCombine has a hard requirement on it.

The approach I've taken here is to produce an analysis that models this
flexibility by making it both a module and a function analysis. This
exposes the fact that it is in fact safe to compute at any point. We can
even make it a valid CGSCC analysis at some point if that is useful.
However, we don't want to have a copy of the actual target library info
state for each function! This state is specific to the triple. The
somewhat direct and blunt approach here is to turn TLI into a pimpl,
with the state and mutators in the implementation class and the query
routines primarily in the wrapper. Then the analysis can lazily
construct and cache the implementations, keyed on the triple, and
on-demand produce wrappers of them for each function.

One minor annoyance is that we will end up with a wrapper for each
function in the module. While this is a bit wasteful (one pointer per
function) it seems tolerable. And it has the advantage of ensuring that
we pay the absolute minimum synchronization cost to access this
information should we end up with a nice parallel function pass manager
in the future. We could look into trying to mark when analysis results
are especially cheap to recompute and more eagerly GC-ing the cached
results, or we could look at supporting a variant of analyses whose
results are specifically *not* cached and expected to just be used and
discarded by the consumer. Either way, these seem like incremental
enhancements that should happen when we start profiling the memory and
CPU usage of the new pass manager and not before.

The other minor annoyance is that if we end up using the TLI in both
a module pass and a function pass, those will be produced by two
separate analyses, and thus will point to separate copies of the
implementation state. While a minor issue, I dislike this and would like
to find a way to cleanly allow a single analysis instance to be used
across multiple IR unit managers. But I don't have a good solution to
this today, and I don't want to hold up all of the work waiting to come
up with one. This too seems like a reasonable thing to incrementally
improve later.

0ca286752e Don't internalize all but main by default.
This is mostly a cleanup, but it changes a fairly old behavior.

Every "real" LTO user was already disabling the silly internalize pass
and creating the internalize pass itself. The difference with this
patch is for "opt -std-link-opts" and the C api.

Now to get a usable behavior out of opt one doesn't need the funny
looking command line:

opt -internalize -disable-internalize -internalize-public-api-list=foo,bar -std-link-opts
