Description

I've been using Claude code for months and only recently started to use Open Code.

I logged in via the OAuth method as suggested on Open Code's website and upon upgrading from Claude Max 5 to Claude Max 20, I think I triggered some kind of review and they banned my account.

I reached out to several Anthropic engineers on Twitter and discovered that using Claude in this way on Open Code violates their terms of service and results in a ban.

Open Code should no longer allow users to log in to any of the OAuth subscriptions because this violates all their terms of service. Users should be using the API key and paying for tokens by the API access.

Plugins

oh-my-opencode

OpenCode version

1.0.223

Steps to reproduce

  1. Log into Claude via OAuth
  2. Use opencode with Claude subscription
  3. Try to upgrade Claude
  4. Get banned

This issue might be related to other OAuth authentication issues. Please check:

  • #6637: OAuth + claude-opus-4-5 returns HTTP 500 - also involves OAuth authentication with Claude models
  • #4291: Make opencode prefer claude subscription over tokens - discusses subscription vs API token authentication

However, this issue specifically raises important concerns about terms of service compliance that should be addressed separately.

The common denominator seems to be the oh-my-opencode plugin.

Hi @johnellison I don't believe that is the case, I have been using OC with CC Max 20 for months now with no issues, I also just saw a person who had your same exact issue and he appealed to Anthropic and got himself unbanned, I asked him if he mentioned he was using OC in the appeal and he confirmed he did. Anthropic ToS is about using it with competing products, OC is not competing with Anthropic main product (the models) as a matter of fact the entire revenue resulting from me using OC is going to Anthropic, I'd gladly switch the model providers before switching OC. If anything OC is the reason Anthropic is getting any penny out of me.

Opus 4.5 is great but other models are not that far behind.

Maybe the dev team can confirm if they have spoken with the Anthropic team about this

I am not sure of the exact mechanism but here is the comment about mentioning OpenCode usage to them and getting unbanned, you can try to reach out to the person

I hope this issue gets resolved. Opencode has gone viral recently in the Korean community of x and threads, and I think this issue is a significant barrier to people's decision to use Opencode.

I got banned before using opencode, without any known violations of their ToS.

I only discovered opencode because I got banned.

I just got banned as well. I was on their Pro plan for weeks using OpenCode with no issues. 1 day after upgrading to their Max plan, it somehow triggered a ban for my account.

(@ilyesm : I also use zsh, but I do NOT use the oh-my-opencode plugin, so it's a mystery. 🤔)

I don't fault OpenCode for this. Terrible experience on Anthropic's side.

My experience with Anthropic:

  1. Hard-dropped my connection to Claude without warning.
  2. Banned my account without any clear warning or message (all I got was a refund email from Stripe, but no notification message from Anthropic told me I was banned).
  3. Requiring me to appeal their ban, but without providing me any info explaining why I was banned in the first place.

How the hell am I supposed to appeal something if I don't even know the violation?

This is the exact reason we need projects like OpenCode, and why I chose this over CC in the first place.

I told Anthropic I'll happily switch to a new AI provider.

Hey Folks,

same happened to me, used OpenCode extensively on my Claude Mx 5x subscription, got hooked on their holiday limit increase, when i did run out of tokens I purchased the 20x plan, kicked off a new task in OpenCode, went grocery shopping and got banned within 20 minutes. No explanation, nothing. I did fill out the appeal form, already waiting 3 days for a reply, i did not mention opencode though.

You can find information about the appeal process here: https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8241253-safeguards-warnings-and-appeals

I know a case of a person who got banned using exclusively Claude Code + their VSCode extension. That person didn't have any "bad" requests or prompts that could trigger/cross the ToS, so I suspect it's the case for some people reporting that here.

I finally got my ban lifted. For anyone else affected reach out to known
employees on X. A quick post saying what happened, mention Anthropic and
someone should respond.

No one responded to the official appeal, and based on the small sampling
here I assume lots got banned over the break due to Opus 4.5 release and
their holiday usage increase.

Love oh-my-open code but need to use the API key not OAuth which makes it
prohibitively expensive!

I think the bans are happening to users who changed their plan while using OAuth in OpenCode. Does that make sense? I've had Max for 4 months and I've been using OpenCode for 1 month, and so far everything's been fine.

Should I be careful now that Claude has been updated to version 2.1.2?

I want to share my experience. I think that indeed, the wave of ban occurred after users already had their Claude account linked to Opencode and they upgraded their subscription.

In my case, I had forgotten to pay for my subscription so it switched to Free Plan then I tried to pay and a few hours later I was banned.

I had Oh-My-Opencode plugin et few others plugins.

I used OpenCode with a Claude Max 5x plan (not realizing it violated TOS) and it started throwing errors after a couple hours -- it appears they detected an agent was using the web ui. Fortunately, I did not get banned.

I upgraded to Claude Max X20 yesterday, mid-afternoon after I hit all my limits and simply needed to continue (after running Claude Max X5 since Aug 2025), have been using my sub with OpenCode since mid-December 2025 (currently still on version 1.1.23, didn't update since I installed it) and I never got so much as an API error related to authentication, throttling, much less banned.

However, I must say that I was only using Git worktrees and multiple running instances while I was still using Claude Code back in November 2025. Currently I'm doing a single continuous OpenCode session with small side chats here and there to fix specific bugs while the main session works. Haven't used oh-my-opencode or any other plugins, only customized Agent prompts and Skills so far.

PS: Upon upgrading Claude plans, ALL of your limits (session, all models, sonnet only) will be reset to 0%. I didn't know/expect that. It was a glad surprise.

I think that's really not open code, that is the issue here. Never used it, but got banned 2 times with different accounts, and both times just minutes after upgrading from pro to max5 subscription. Never got the reason why, of course, support prefers not to answer on that. And yeah, I know that creating an account after getting a ban is again - prohibited by their terms of service, but if I was banned for that second time - why only a half-year after and only on upgrading subscription?
Either way, I'm using Google AI pro now, which is cheaper and have similar limits on Claude, but with addition of Gemini and some bonuses like GDrive space. Not going back.
