assume that shorts are smaller than ints. On a 16-bit machine,

the same thing that the previous test meant to, but works on
16-bit machines, too.
("print unsigned char != (~0)"): Same test, complemented.
(gnu_pid_to_exec_file): Add PID parameter.
(set_sig_thread_cmd): Use PIDGET on return value from
thread_id_to_pid.
(proc_string): Use MERGEPID to construct argument to
