The nil pointer dereference in stdio.go happens when the plugin process or its communication channels aren't properly initialized—usually because the plugin container isn't running, isn't reachable, or failed to start correctly. This is a known issue in self-hosted Docker environments, especially with plugins like Xinference and Ollama, and has been reported by others as well (example, example).

Here’s a checklist to help resolve it:

  • Make sure the plugin daemon container is running and healthy.
  • Check that your Docker network allows communication between the Dify core and plugin containers. Do not use localhost or 127.0.0.1 for service endpoints; use host.docker.internal or your host’s internal IP (details).
  • Double-check environment variables: PLUGIN_DAEMON_URL should point to the correct host and port, and SANDBOX_ENABLE_NETWORK should be true.
  • If you migrated or reused Docker volumes from another installation, try reinstalling or reinitializing the plugin.
  • Ensure the plugin has outbound internet access on first run to install dependencies (details).
  • Review plugin daemon logs for errors during startup or model registration.

If the plugin container is not reachable or fails to initialize, the Dify backend will attempt to use a nil communication channel, causing the panic you see. Fixing the network or plugin daemon setup should resolve the issue.

Image "I also added the Xinference qwen model. The model loads successfully, but when calling the model in the Dify application chat scenario, the plugin_daemon sends a stream: true request, Xinference returns an SSE response, but the Dify api service ultimately receives an empty answer."
