This is a known limitation in Dify: agent nodes only allow models that support agent strategies like function calling or ReACT. Most local models, including those deployed via LocalAI, do not appear in the agent selection unless they support these methods. The backend and UI are designed to show only models that guarantee consistent API interaction, which usually means online models, so local models are excluded from agent selection unless they meet these requirements. Full support for arbitrary local models in agent strategies is not yet implemented as of v1.9.21 2 3 .

If your LocalAI model supports function calling, double-check your plugin configuration and refresh the UI after adding new models—sometimes they don't appear until you do so. Also, make sure your plugin is up to date and properly configured. If the model still doesn't show up, you can use default LLM parameters in the agent node as a workaround. Most issues with models not appearing in agents are due to plugin compatibility or configuration, not the core Dify code4 5 .
