kanchi 966fa8ca04 Python: Replace mutable default arguments and prevent unintended side effects (#11849)
### Motivation and Context

Some functions and methods were using mutable objects (typically `dict`)
as default argument values.
In Python, default arguments are evaluated only once at the time of
function definition.
This can lead to unexpected behavior when the default value is modified
within the function, as subsequent calls to the function may reuse the
modified object.

As a result, calling such functions or methods multiple times can lead
to unintended behavior.

Reference:
[8.7. Function definitions (Official Python
Documentation)](https://docs.python.org/3.12/reference/compound_stmts.html#function-definitions)
> Default parameter values are evaluated from left to right when the
function definition is executed. This means that the expression is
evaluated once, when the function is defined, and that the same
“pre-computed” value is used for each call. This is especially important
to understand when a default parameter value is a mutable object, such
as a list or a dictionary: if the function modifies the object (e.g. by
appending an item to a list), the default parameter value is in effect
modified. This is generally not what was intended. A way around this is
to use None as the default, and explicitly test for it in the body of
the function, e.g.:

### Description

- Replaced mutable types (e.g., `dict`, `list`) used as default argument
values with `None`, and properly initialized them within the function
body.
- Reviewed and updated the parts of the code that performed destructive
modifications on the arguments, to avoid unintentionally modifying
variables from the caller’s scope.
- ~Added the `flake8-bugbear` rule in Ruff to detect this kind of
issue.~
- ~For now, errors in `tests` and `samples` directories are ignored due
to the large number of violations.~

I've always hated having to add the .create to a settings object, this
removes that, you can just use the regular init, added benefit is that
it has the proper fields in the docstrings for each implemented settings
object!

### Description

Adds a __new__ method to the base settings class, which takes the prefix
and if supplied the env_file and encoding, then calls model_rebuild and
then the init.

Evan Mattson 174bdabf38 Python: Introduce feature decorator to allow for experimental and release candidate decorator usage (#10691)
### Motivation and Context

<!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo!
Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following
information:

  2. What problem does it solve?
  3. What scenario does it contribute to?
  4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here.
-->

This change is required to improve the flexibility and maintainability
of our feature annotation system. Previously, separate decorators (e.g.,
`experimental_function` and `experimental_class`) were used to mark
experimental features, resulting in code duplication and limiting our
ability to handle additional feature stages. As our SDK evolves, we need
a unified approach that can support multiple stages—such as
experimental, release candidate, and future states—while also allowing
version information for release candidate features to be centrally
managed.

### Description

<!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design.
These notes will help understanding how your code works. Thanks! -->

This PR refactors our feature decorators by introducing a unified
`stage` decorator that updates the docstring and attaches metadata for
both functions and classes. Two convenience decorators, `experimental`
and `release_candidate`, are built on top of `stage`:
- The `experimental` decorator marks features as experimental and sets
an `is_experimental` attribute.
- The `release_candidate` decorator supports multiple usage patterns
(with or without parentheses and with an optional version parameter) to
mark features as release candidate and sets an `is_release_candidate`
attribute.

This unified approach reduces duplication, simplifies the codebase, and
lays the groundwork for easily extending feature stages in the future.

This decorator supports the following usage patterns:
- `@experimental` (for both classes and functions)
- `@release_candidate`  (no parentheses)
- `@release_candidate()`  (empty parentheses)
- `@release_candidate("1.21.3-rc1")`  (positional version)
- `@release_candidate(version="1.21.3-rc1")`  (keyword version)

Evan Mattson d4057373c0 Python: Support DefaultAzureCredential Auth for Azure Resources (#8711)
### Motivation and Context

For security best practices, we're moving away from api key based auth
for Azure resources like Azure OpenAI. Previously, all tests and samples
run with an api_key only, handled via the env var, the .env file, or
directly passed into the AzureChatCompletion constructor. If the api_key
is not found once the Azure Settings are loaded, we will attempt to
retrieve a token via the DefaultAzureCredential. If it succeeds, we use
the `ad_token`; otherwise, if the token is empty (meaning we failed to
retrieve it), Pydantic validation will fail as part of service
construction, just as it does today.

The user may configure a `TOKEN_ENDPOINT` (for example,
`AZURE_OPENAI_TOKEN_ENDPOINT`) to override the default token endpoint
used for AzureOpenAI, if required. This is also possible for the Python
Sessions Container Apps plugin via `ACA_TOKEN_ENDPOINT`, although the
default value is specified and works well if the user has the proper
role on the resource.

This introduces a sample that uses function calling with a local model,
Nexus Raven V2, in this case using the API, but the same model can be
loaded using the Hugging Face Connection, the class here is highly
adapted and specific to Nexus including parsing the returned function
call value, into FunctionCallContent and then running that.
It then returns one or more ChatMessageContents with the function call
content and function result content which can then be shared with a
OpenAI call.

### Motivation and Context

Updates to the User-Agent are required so that we can align with all
three SK languages. Examples:

User agent
- semantic-kernel-csharp/1.1.1 [existing user agent]
- semantic-kernel-java/1.1.1 [existing user agent]
- semantic-kernel-python/1.1.1 [existing user agent]

semantic-kernel-version header

### Description

Updates to the user agent to reflect the desired changes/standardization
across all SK languages. Adding unit tests.
- Closes #6827
- Moves the `USER_AGENT` const from its previous home in the openai
const file to a more generic const file.
- Updates unit tests to be able to run properly when a valid `.env` file
exists in the current working directory. The unit tests patch the env
vars and our current implementation of Pydantic Settings loads the
`.env` file if not specified.

Evan Mattson 2a7763aa3b Python: Updates to fix changes made to ACA Sessions Plugin (#6507)
### Motivation and Context

There were changes made to the ACA upload file API that weren't made in
the Python SDK. This caused the file upload to error out. The ACA team
also passed along their docs and advice to update to a certain API
version, and what changes that brings.

<!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo!

information:

  3. What scenario does it contribute to?
  4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here.
-->

### Description

Fixes #6494
Closes #6509
- Properly handle the file upload's response body as it now contains a
`$values` attribute and then a list of key-value pairs.
- Also properly construct the `remote_file_path` by checking if it
includes `/mnt/data/` and if not, appending it to the front of the
`remote_file_path`.
- Update to use ACA API version 2024-02-02. This means the API version
needs to be included with all requests. Adding API version to requests,
and adding session ID to all requests.
- Removed the ability to pass in a BufferedReader to the upload file
function since the LLM doesn't know how to handle that. As is done in
dotnet, allow the user to specify a local_file_path which the model can
handle, to upload a file.
- Update unit tests

The initial implementation of Pydantic Settings was not optimal yet,
more optimized now.

### Description

Added a KernelBaseSettings class in kernel_pydantic
Rebased all settings off that
Added single create method to KernelBaseSettings:
- sets model_config.env_prefix to cls.end_prefix allowing us to set the
env_prefix as a classvar on each subclass and it works
- if env_file_path is set, set that in model_config
- strip all None values out of inputted values, then instantiate

This also allows us to pass the settings that are supplied to the
settings class, for overriding env settings.

Evan Mattson 46f5ea15a2 Python: Introduce Pydantic settings (#6193)
### Motivation and Context

SK Python is tightly coupled to the use of a `.env` file to read all
secrets, keys, endpoints, and more. This doesn't scale well for users
who wish to be able to use environment variables with their SK
Applications. By introducing Pydantic Settings, it is possible to use
both environment variables as well as have a fall-back to a `.env` file
(via a `env_file_path` parameter), if desired.

By introducing Pydantic Settings, we are removing the requirement to
have to create Text/Embedding/Chat completion objects with an `api_key`
or other previously required information (in the case of
AzureChatCompletion that means an `endpoint`, an `api_key`, a
`deployment_name`, and an `api_version`). When the AI connector is
created, the Pydantic settings are loaded either via env vars or the
fall-back `.env` file, and that means the user can create a chat
completion object like:

```python
chat_completion = OpenAIChatCompletion(service_id="test")
```

or, to optionally override the `ai_model_id` env var:

```python
chat_completion = OpenAIChatCompletion(service_id="test", ai_model_id="gpt-4-1106")
```
Note: we have left the ability to specific an `api_key`/`org_id` for
`OpenAIChatCompletion` or a `deployment_name`, `endpoint`, `base_url`,
and `api_version` for `AzureChatCompletion` as before, but if your
settings are configured to use env vars/.env file then there is no need
to pass this information.

### Description

The PR introduces the use of Pydantic settings and removes the use of
the python-dotenv library.
- Closes #1779
- Updates notebooks, samples, code and tests to remove the explicit
config of api_key or other previous .env files values.
- Adds new unit test config using monkeypatch to simulate env variables

- All unit and integration tests passing

The loading of plugins and functions into Kernel was not fully
consistent and clear, this is now simplified.

Adding a plugin can now be done in two ways:
- multiple: `kernel.add_plugins[plugin1, plugin2]`
- single plugin: `kernel.add_plugin(plugin)`
- if the plugin here is a class, with methods that have the
kernel_function decorator then that is parsed into a plugin

Adding a function can now be done in three ways:
- multiple: `kernel.add_functions([func1, func2]` or
`kernel.add_function({'func1': func1})`
- single: `kernel.add_function('plugin_name', func1)`
- from a prompt: `kernel.add_function(function_name='func1',
prompt='test prompt', ...)`

In other words, all the different methods that were available have been
simplified, these methods also return the created plugin (or updated
plugin for the `add_functions` method. The `add_function` (singular)
method has a parameter `return_plugin` to control whether you get the
created or updated plugin, instead of the created function.

**An important callout:**

One big internal change that this introduces is that a function that
gets added to a plugin (new or existing) is automatically copied, the
metadata is deep-copied and the plugin_name in the metadata is updated,
so this sequence is valid now:

```python
@kernel_function(name='test')
def f(...):
   etc
func = KernelFunctionFromMethod(method=f)
func2 = kernel.add_function('plugin', func)
assert func != func2
```

Also closes: #5855

### Description

This PR:
- Allows the use of AzureOpenAI for the FC Stepwise Planner
- Fixes some formatting issues when generating the names/metadata of
Plugins. .NET gets the function metadata as JSON, and the Azure Model
performs much better with it formatted like this.
- Fix some missing spaces in the constant message used in the planner --
Azure is treating the new lines in that const message incorrectly and it
causes content filtering results (reaching out to the team to understand
why this is).

The existing Exceptions structure was very much inspired by dotnet, this
is now replaced with a pythonic implementations.

This means all Exceptions derive from KernelException and then
specialise for different purposes.

Closes #2194

### Description

<!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design.
These notes will help understanding how your code works. Thanks! -->

Added folder for all exception types, all can be imported through `from
semantic_kernel.exceptions import ...` no need for a user to know which
file the relevant one is in, but keeps things tidy for developers.
Removed old KernelException, added back subtypes for the errorcodes.
Went through everything to make sure the `raise ... from exc` pattern is
used as much as possible as that returns a better stacktrace.

Added:
- KernelFunctionFromPrompt class
- KernelFunctionFromMethod class
- tests for both.

Changed:
- removed parts of KernelFunction that are specific to one of the two
subtypes
- removed expose attribute of KernelParameterMetadata as that is no
longer needed

Evan Mattson 8b16af69c0 Python: Remove the memory tied to the kernel. Update kernel examples and notebooks. (#5143)
### Motivation and Context

As we move toward v1, it is necessary to remove the single kernel memory
attribute so that memory connectors can be handled via plugins. This
change also refactors the `import_plugin` method name to be similar with
dotnet as `import_plugin_from_object`, and introduces a simple
`kernel.invoke_prompt` method.

information:

  2. What problem does it solve?
  3. What scenario does it contribute to?
  4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here.
-->

### Description

Updates are:
- The memory connector is now passed to the `SemanticTextMemory` class,
along with the embedding generator. This allows the user to add memory
to multiple plugins/services as needed. Closes #4632
- Kernel Examples and Notebooks were updated to reflect these changes.
Now using Service Enum for all notebooks. Closes #4557
- There were planners using memory related to the kernel, to store the
functions, and many of these planners are non-existent in dotnet's v1
SDK. Python has pending work to update the planner/remove deprecated
planners before getting to v1.
- A Kernel method called `invoke_prompt` was introduced to invoke a
simple prompt, and return the `FunctionResult` when complete.
- All unit/integration tests are passing.

5817c2b927 Python: major features for the Kernel Arguments, Function Result and new Prompt Templating (#5077)
### Motivation and Context

<!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please
help reviewers and future users, providing the following information:

Major work to replace the context with Kernel Arguments on the front-end
and Function Results on the back.

Updated the function decorator to a new approach, in line with dotnet.

Revamps the way function are called, allowing native functions to be
completely ignorant of SK, other then the decorator.

This also moves things into the new folder structure in sync with
dotnet.

### Description

<!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design.

Adds:
- KernelArguments, a dict-like class that replaces the variables in
KernelContext. Closes #4565
- FunctionResult, a class to hold the results of function executions,
includes the function, the value and metadata, as well as two convenient
function to get the value out of it (str and get_inner_content) the
first is generic, the second specifically for KernelContent responses
(from AI services).
- AI Service Selector class, has a default, which is based on the order
in the arguments followed by the order in the functions, can be
overridden to implement your own strategy. Closes #4631
- Introduces ChatHistory and refactors the PromptTemplateConfig. Closes
#4856, #4630
- Improves parsing of templates, will now all validate during creation
and throw an error then, instead of some that do not check for validaty
until used.
- Introduces named_args block and thereby the ability to have multiple
arguments for a function call in a template. Closes #5003

Updates:
- kernel_function decorators, the parameter decorator was removed and
instead we now use Annotated to add a description of a field and we get
the type and required from the function definition.
- core plugins, use the new approach to kernel_function decorators.
- planners, template engines have all been updated to use the kernel and
kernelarguments instead of Context.
- Events have been updated, now use kernelarguments and function_result
- Tokenizers support for named_args and improvements on parsing and
checking.
- Kernel examples and notebooks to use the latest code.
- All unit and integration tests. There is more code coverage now than
before.

Removed:
- kernelContext
- kernel_function_parameter_decorator
- delegate handling code for native functions
- file_io_plugin and tests
- SemanticFunctionConfig
- ChatPromptTemplate

Julio Carlos Menendez 08710373a4 Python: Renames SK prefix to Kernel (#4716)

The .NET SDK uses the `Kernel` prefix instead of `SK` for the context,
function, model, etc. classes. This PR aligns the Python package with
that policy.

Evan MattsonandEvan Mattson 674af5468d Python: Rename skills to plugins. Update prompt template config to use execution settings to align with dotnet. (#4595)
### Motivation and Context

To better align with SK dotnet v1, Python skills have been renamed to
plugins. This removes the root samples skills directory as dotnet
supports the plugins and their configs. This the beginning of more work
to consolidate other files/names, per the backlog. I've run several
greps for files or file names containing "skill" (case insensitive), and
no results appear. Do alert if you find anything else that includes
"skill."

Fixes #3319

### Description

This is a large, breaking change PR as the replacement of "skills" to
"plugins" affects many files. It was difficult to break this up into
smaller chunks without leaving the SK Python repo in a bad state for
some time. Other updates include:

- Prompt template has been updated to use `execution_settings`, which
aligns with dotnet, from the previous `completion` that Python used.
- AzureOpenAI/OpenAI function calling has been updated to match the
current versions of tools/tool_choice. Parsing messages in the open_ai
utils respects this as it now looks for tool_calls and it configures the
function_call with the id (new), name, and argument).
- File renames, where the filename used to contain "skill" will look
like new code, but it's the same code, just with "plugin" in the name.
- Kernel examples and notebooks have been tested and are working. Unit
tests and integration tests are passing.
