Python: Json schema improvements for Union and Optional (#7367)
### Motivation and Context We have some gaps in how we build the JSON schema for function calling related to Union and Optional types. There is also some work to do related to handling `Optional` versus `param | None = None`. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description This PR improves the JSON schema building for the Union and Optional types. It adds additional tests and improves some existing tests. - Closes #7297 - Closes #7298 <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. These notes will help understanding how your code works. Thanks! --> ### Contribution Checklist <!-- Before submitting this PR, please make sure: --> - [X] The code builds clean without any errors or warnings - [X] The PR follows the [SK Contribution Guidelines](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) and the [pre-submission formatting script](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-scripts) raises no violations - [X] All unit tests pass, and I have added new tests where possible - [X] I didn't break anyone 😄 |

To enable Mistral Models with Semantic Kernel, there was the issue #6499 in the Backlog to add a MistralAI Connector 2. What problem does it solve ? It solves the problem, that semantic kernel is not yet integrated with MistralAI 3. What scenario does it contribute to? The scenario is to use different connector than HF,OpenAI or AzureOpenAI. When User's want to use Mistral they can easliy integrate it now 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. #6499 ### Description The changes made are designed by the open_ai connector, i tried to stay as close as possible to the structure. For the integration i installed the mistral python package in the repository. I added the following Classes : - MistrealAIChatPromptExcecutionSettings --> Responsible to administrate the Prompt Execution against MistralAI - MistralAIChatCompletion --> Responsible to coordinate the Classes and for Content parsing - MistralAISettings --> Basic Settings to work with the MistralAIClient **To test the changes with the tests please add MISTRALAI_API_KEY and MISTRALAI_CHAT_MODEL_ID as Enviorment Variable** From a design decision i moved the processing of Functions from Connectors to the ChatCompletionClientBaseClass What is integrated yet : - [X] Integrate Mistral AI ChatCompletion Models without Streaming - [X] Integrate Mistral AI Chat Completion Models with Streaming - [X] Simple Integration Test to test Streaming and non Streaming - [x] Extended Testing including Unit Testing & More Integration Tests ### Contribution Checklist <!-- Before submitting this PR, please make sure: --> - [X] The code builds clean without any errors or warnings - [X] The PR follows the [SK Contribution Guidelines](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) and the [pre-submission formatting script](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-scripts) raises no violations - [X] All unit tests pass, and I have added new tests where possible - [X] I didn't break anyone 😄 --------- Co-authored-by: Nico Möller <[email protected]> |

Python: Introduce the new function calling abstraction, FunctionChoiceBehavior (#6910)
### Motivation and Context The current `FunctionCallBehavior` has allowed us to utilize auto function calling for OpenAI type models. As we proceed to support more AI connectors, that differ from OpenAI models, we need to be able to handle functions for all models that support function calling. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description In this PR: - We introduce a new function calling abstraction called `FunctionChoiceBehavior` which has three types: Auto, Required, and None. - One is able to configure the `function_choice_behavior` along with fully qualified function names (e.g., plugin1.function1), `maximum_auto_invoke_attempts` or `auto_invoke_kernel_functions` in yaml and JSON prompts. We have a new concept example showing how to do this for for yaml and JSON prompts. - If the fully qualified names are specified in the config file, they take precedence over the filters, if specified at a later point. - To make sure this isn't a breaking change, we still handle the previous `FunctionCallBehavior`, but so we can make decisions on the new `FunctionChoiceBehavior` we map the `FunctionCallBehavior` to `FunctionChoiceBehavior`. Each time `FunctionCallBehavior` is updated, `FunctionChoiceBehavior` will be updated, too. - The `_process_tool_call()` method in the `open_ai_chat_completion_base` needs to maintain the argument name as `function_call_behavior` as we cannot introduce a breaking change. - All concept samples have been converted to use `FunctionChoiceBehavior`. - New unit tests have been added for `FunctionChoiceBehavior` and we still currently support `FunctionCallBehavior` tests to make sure we haven't broken the backwards compatibility. - Added `deprecated` typing decorators to classes/methods to alert users that it would be best to transition to `FunctionChoiceBehavior` even though `FunctionCallBehavior` is still supported. - The `FunctionCallingStepwisePlanner` was updated to use the new `FunctionChoiceBehavior`. - Closes #6496, #6458 - Addresses #6626 <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design.

Python: Fix sample plugin path for Windows. Re-enable samples CI tests. (#6691)
### Motivation and Context Fix sample plugin path for Windows. Re-enable samples CI tests. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description Fix sample plugin path for Windows. Re-enable samples CI tests. - Tests passing locally on both MacOS and Windows. - Adds logic to each notebook to properly set up the correct path to find imports. Notebooks should now run out of the box to close #6588 - Added retry logic for the samples tests to retry 3 times in the event of a failure. - Install notebook pip package at kernel level instead of shell level - Updated all occurrences of `gpt-3.5-turbo-1106` to `gpt-3.5-turbo` which is `gpt-3.5-turbo-0125`. The GH Action code quality check was failing for this same code in #6675, so this is superseding it. Now that the GH actions are fixed, this also supersedes #6681. <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. These notes will help understanding how your code works. Python: Handle streaming tool call attempts. Fix func calling concept example. (#6560)
### Motivation and Context If auto_invoke was False and the function used streaming, the max func attempts were being set to 0 which Python's range function doesn't like. Python: Fix schema handling. Fix function result return for type list. (#6370)
### Motivation and Context Building the tools json payload from the kernel parameter metadata wasn't properly including an object of type `array`. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. Add unit tests. - Closes #6367 - Closes #6360 - Fixes the FunctionResult return for a type string -- if the FunctionResult is of type KernelContent then return the first element of the list, otherwise return the complete list. - Fix the kernel function from method to include the proper type_object for the return parameter so that the schema can be created properly. - Add retry logic for a sometimes flaky function calling stepwise planner integration test. - Add a check during function calling that makes sure the model is returning the proper number of arguments based on how many function arguments are required. <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. Python: Fix FC stepwise planner. (#6357)
### Motivation and Context The FC stepwise planner was breaking when trying to process the function call result because if a filter is not configured, then the context will be None. We need to only try to extract the FC result if the context is not none, otherwise it will already be present in the chat history. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Python: Introduce Pydantic settings (#6193)
### Motivation and Context SK Python is tightly coupled to the use of a `.env` file to read all secrets, keys, endpoints, and more. This doesn't scale well for users who wish to be able to use environment variables with their SK Applications. By introducing Pydantic Settings, it is possible to use both environment variables as well as have a fall-back to a `.env` file (via a `env_file_path` parameter), if desired. By introducing Pydantic Settings, we are removing the requirement to have to create Text/Embedding/Chat completion objects with an `api_key` or other previously required information (in the case of AzureChatCompletion that means an `endpoint`, an `api_key`, a `deployment_name`, and an `api_version`). When the AI connector is created, the Pydantic settings are loaded either via env vars or the fall-back `.env` file, and that means the user can create a chat completion object like: ```python chat_completion = OpenAIChatCompletion(service_id="test") ``` or, to optionally override the `ai_model_id` env var: ```python chat_completion = OpenAIChatCompletion(service_id="test", ai_model_id="gpt-4-1106") ``` Note: we have left the ability to specific an `api_key`/`org_id` for `OpenAIChatCompletion` or a `deployment_name`, `endpoint`, `base_url`, and `api_version` for `AzureChatCompletion` as before, but if your settings are configured to use env vars/.env file then there is no need to pass this information. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description The PR introduces the use of Pydantic settings and removes the use of the python-dotenv library. - Closes #1779 - Updates notebooks, samples, code and tests to remove the explicit config of api_key or other previous .env files values. - Adds new unit test config using monkeypatch to simulate env variables for testing - All unit and integration tests passing <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. Python: update ToolCallBehavior and rename to FunctionCallBehavior to match dotnet and extended capabilities (#5919)
### Motivation and Context <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> Updated ToolCallBehavior to match the approach in dotnet Closes #5727 Closes #5447 Closes #5414 ### Description <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. These notes will help understanding how your code works. Thanks! --> Extends ToolCallBehavior class with fields: - enable_kernel_functions - max_use_attempts - allow_any_request_kernel_function Added subclasses of TCB: - KernelFunctions, the configure_options set tools to all functions in the kernel and tool_choice to auto - EnabledFunctions, created with a filter dict, sets tool_choice to auto and tools to the filtered list - RequiredFunction, created with a function fully qualified name (plugin-function), sets tool_choice to that name and adds the definition of just that tool to tools. Methods: - configure_options(kernel, exection_settings) - This sets the execution settings depending on the field in toolcallbehavior - Does nothing in the default ToolCallBehavior class, so there you have to manually set tools and tool_choice ClassMethods: - AutoInvokeKernelFunctions, returns KernelFunctions class with max_auto_invoke_attempts set to 5 (default) - EnabelKernelFunctions, return KernelFunctions but with max_auto_invoke_attempts set to 0, disabling auto invoke, but it might return toolcalls from the model - EnableFunctions, takes the filter and a auto_invoke params and returns a EnabledFunctions class, if auto_invoke == True then it will auto invoke, otherwise it wont. - RequiredFunctions, returns RequiredFunction class with either max_invoke_attempts 0 or 1 depending on auto_invoke param Changed OpenAIChatPromptExecutionSettings to have a field called tool_call_behavior instead of max_invoke_attempts and auto_invoke_tool_calls fields. Some changes in openai_chat_completion_base to handle this. ### Contribution Checklist <!-- Before submitting this PR, please make sure: --> - [x] The code builds clean without any errors or warnings - [x] The PR follows the [SK Contribution Guidelines](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) and the [pre-submission formatting script](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-scripts) raises no violations - [x] All unit tests pass, and I have added new tests where possible - [ ] I didn't break anyone 😄 --------- Co-authored-by: Evan Mattson <[email protected]> Co-authored-by: Evan Mattson <[email protected]> |

Python: Retire planners that are not supported in dotnet. (#6141)
### Motivation and Context In dotnet, there are no action, basic or stepwise planners. Since Python has the FunctionCallingStepwisePlanner, we will retire the legacy stepwise planner. We're leaving the Sequential planner for the meantime as it provides the developer with a way to show the plan steps. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Python: (Astra DB) Include caller identity as user-agent when issuing HTTP request to Astra DB's Data API (#5921)
### Motivation and Context This PR enriches the HTTP requests to the Astra DB Data API (occurring in the AstraClient) with a User-Agent header specifying the identity of the caller (specifically, "semantic_kernel"). While not mandatory, this is good practice with Astra DB and helps collecting aggregate usage data on the API side. ### Description Using the `importlib.metadata` library the package version is extracted (in a fail-safe way) and used, if present, to enrich the caller information (variable `ASTRA_CALLER_IDENTITY`, later set as the user-agent header for all HTTP requests to the Data API). ### Contribution Checklist - [X] The code builds clean without any errors or warnings - [X] The PR follows the [SK Contribution Guidelines](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) and the [pre-submission formatting script](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-scripts) raises no violations - [X] All unit tests pass, and I have added new tests where possible - [X] I didn't break anyone 😄 --------- Co-authored-by: Eduard van Valkenburg <[email protected]> |

The loading of plugins and functions into Kernel was not fully
consistent and clear, this is now simplified.
Adding a plugin can now be done in two ways:
- multiple: `kernel.add_plugins[plugin1, plugin2]`
- single plugin: `kernel.add_plugin(plugin)`
- if the plugin here is a class, with methods that have the
kernel_function decorator then that is parsed into a plugin
Adding a function can now be done in three ways:
- multiple: `kernel.add_functions([func1, func2]` or
`kernel.add_function({'func1': func1})`
- single: `kernel.add_function('plugin_name', func1)`
- from a prompt: `kernel.add_function(function_name='func1',
prompt='test prompt', ...)`
In other words, all the different methods that were available have been
simplified, these methods also return the created plugin (or updated
plugin for the `add_functions` method. The `add_function` (singular)
method has a parameter `return_plugin` to control whether you get the
created or updated plugin, instead of the created function.
**An important callout:**
One big internal change that this introduces is that a function that
gets added to a plugin (new or existing) is automatically copied, the
metadata is deep-copied and the plugin_name in the metadata is updated,
so this sequence is valid now:
```python
@kernel_function(name='test')
def f(...):
etc
func = KernelFunctionFromMethod(method=f)
func2 = kernel.add_function('plugin', func)
assert func != func2
```
Also closes: #5855

Python: Introduce operations to handle OpenAI plugins, improve OpenAPI plugins, and allow for auth (#5695)
### Motivation and Context Python had the ability to handle operations for OpenAPI plugins, but at a basic level. It did not have the ability to handle OpenAI plugins, nor did it allow the user to configure an authentication callback. Python: Handlebars template support (#5466)
--> Introducing Handlebars templating to the Python Semantic Kernel! Closes: #5446 Prework for: #4641 ### Description <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. These notes will help understanding how your code works. Thanks! --> Adds HandlebarsPromptTemplate as a subclass of PromptTemplateBase Adds second literal to the PromptTemplateConfig definition Adds helpers for Handlebars (system_helpers) and `create_helper_from_function` function Moves fully_qualified_name into KernelFunctionMetadata instead of in different extensions. Defaults are still 'semantic-kernel' templates, and without making explicit changes that still is the norm. Adds a azure_chat_gpt_handlebars.py sample ### Contribution Checklist <!-- Before submitting this PR, please make sure: --> - [x] The code builds clean without any errors or warnings - [x] The PR follows the [SK Contribution Guidelines](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) and the [pre-submission formatting script](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-scripts) raises no violations - [x] All unit tests pass, and I have added new tests where possible - [x] I didn't break anyone 😄 |

Python: Introduce the function calling stepwise planner (#5350)
### Motivation and Context To further align with the SK dotnet SDK and its functionality, the Python SDK needs a function calling stepwise planner. Now that we have auto tool calling available, it makes sense to introduce this planner. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description This PR: - Introduces the function calling stepwise planner, its planner options, and planner result. Closes #4642 - Introduces a kernel example `function_calling_stepwise_planner.py` to exercise the planner and show how it works. - Adds unit tests and an integration test. <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. These notes will help understanding how your code works. Python: add py3.12 to unit tests (#5191)
--> Since Python 3.12 is now released we should test with it. In the fall 3.8 will be out of support so then we should remove support for that. Since Numpy no longer support py 3.8 as of [1.25](https://numpy.org/doc/stable/release/1.25.0-notes.html) we pin that for py3.8, including other packages that depend on older version of numpy for py3.8, and allow the new versions to work against newer version of python. Python: Properly handle exceptions in the kernel using the exception metadata (#5391)
### Motivation and Context Two things: 1) Add the exception to the on function invoked args if an exception exists in the function result. 2) Set the stepwise planner's goal to the plan's description, not the name. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description The PR addresses: - Properly handling exceptions to raise them from the kernel if a function result contains an exception in the metadata. Closes #5385 - In the stepwise planner, the goal was getting set as the plan's name, instead of the description. Closes #5316 <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. Python: Support Auto tool calling for OpenAI models (#5267)
### Motivation and Context Auto tool calling hasn't been implemented in Python for OpenAI models. This is a much needed feature, which helps open the possibilities and extends being able to use the OpenAI models for just pure back and forth chats. <!-- Thank you for your contribution to the semantic-kernel repo! Please help reviewers and future users, providing the following information: 1. Why is this change required? 2. What problem does it solve? 3. What scenario does it contribute to? 4. If it fixes an open issue, please link to the issue here. --> ### Description This PR: - introduces auto tool calls for OpenAI models. If the prompt function is of an OpenAI chat completion type, then we pass the kernel as an argument to the OpenAI Chat Completion Base class. The kernel is used to auto-invoke tools/functions seamlessly as part of the chat completion request. Closes #4553 - splits the current chat completion/chat completion stream methods into smaller, more readable/functional methods in the OpenAI Chat Completion Base class. - Adds an integration test to cover auto invoke tool calls - Updates a kernel example to be able to work for a streaming/non-streaming tool call. Other Kernel Examples that don't use auto invoke tools still work as they did before. - Removes old code in the utils file that was related to the manual form of invoking function calls. <!-- Describe your changes, the overall approach, the underlying design. These notes will help understanding how your code works. Thanks! --> ### Contribution Checklist <!-- Before submitting this PR, please make sure: --> - [X] The code builds clean without any errors or warnings - [X] The PR follows the [SK Contribution Guidelines](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md) and the [pre-submission formatting script](https://github.com/microsoft/semantic-kernel/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-scripts) raises no violations - [X] All unit tests pass, and I have added new tests where possible - [X] I didn't break anyone 😄 --------- Co-authored-by: Eduard van Valkenburg <[email protected]> |
