Cockpit_active was latched inside ship_render_player_ship(), which only
runs when Viewer_obj is non-null. External, chase, warp-chase, topdown,
free-camera and dead views all null Viewer_obj, so the flag froze at its
last cockpit-view value and cockpitinactive HUD gauges vanished. It was
also read before being written each frame (by the show-ship check and the
shadow helpers), so those decisions lagged a frame on any transition.
Replace it with three functions computed on demand:
- ship_cockpit_enabled(sip): the ship has a cockpit model and cockpits
aren't disabled; used by the Show_ship_only_if_cockpits_enabled checks
- ship_render_player_cockpit(sip): the above, outside topdown view;
replaces three duplicated copies of that expression
- ship_render_player_cockpit_active(): whether the viewer's cockpit is
being rendered this frame; used by the HUD cockpit-view-choice checks
With the predicate correct, the VM_CHASE special cases added for #4804
are no longer needed and are removed. In chase view, cockpitinactive
gauges now also respect pop-up state, No_ets, and setRenderOverride,
which the early return in HudGauge::canRender() used to bypass.

* use std::move() for local variables that are copied but not reused
Addresses ~140 Coverity "Variable copied when it could be moved"
defects across 74 files. Every std::move() targets a local variable
whose value is consumed by push_back, emplace, assignment, lambda
capture, or a function call and is never read again afterward.

String processing enhancement prerequisites for the upcoming `split_str_once` PR.
1. Add overloads of some string processing functions with a length parameter, to allow processing of substrings of C-strings
2. Add overloads of gr_printf that work with string lengths
3. Add constructors to `HUD_message_data` and `line_node`
4. Rename "size" to "len" in `vm_strndup` for clarity
5. Fill in some string attribute annotations
6. Make the rest of the HUD render functions `const`
7. Removed unneeded circular #includes in code/globalincs/memory/
These were coded for the `split_str` refactor, but are generally useful elsewhere as well.
1. Use SCP_string in some utility functions where appropriate
2. Avoid copying C-strings in some utility functions where it isn't necessary
3. Add concat functions to `SCP_vector`
4. Change return type `int` to `bool` on some common parselo functions
5. Add `find_white_space` and `find_gray_space` parselo functions
Message Lines were not being rendered to the proper position for certain resolutions per issue #7143.
#6575 seemed to be the commit it broke on, and looking at that commit it showed that code added `x` and `y` to the render string positions, even though `x` and `y` did not exist there before.
This 1-line PR fixes that issue, and it is confirmed to fix the issue by KamiGaAtaeta. Also I checked and on more standard resolutions the message lines still display as expected in both mission and the HUD Config screen.
* base working version
* localization and minor tweaks
* add retail UI controls
* Add way to hide gauges from Config view
* convert hud config from index matching to id matching
* clang
* Add scaling for vfnts and scale multipler to gr_string
* nullptr
* Add scaling to a couple other string operations
* Add scaling features to additional bitmap drawing methods
* Implement framework for rendering hud gauges in config mode
* fix merge error
* address feedback
* make mission log dynamic
Change the mission log from a static array to a dynamic vector. This removes any chance of the mission log running into a limit (as regularly happened with the last mission of Shepherds before the limit bump) and also prevents strange mission bugs caused by culling obsolete entries.
This also unifies the API a bit by renaming the public `message_log_` function prefixes to `mission_log_`, removing the redundant `Num_log_lines` variable, and removing `Log_scrollback_vec` from the header.
Implements #5878.
* feedback
* refactor to reference rather than pointer
Check the filenames used to initialize HUD gauges and mark the gauge as hi-res if the filename starts with 2_. Also add a script method to return this value.
Additionally, make accessor methods `const`.
* Fixup HUD for slewing
* Fix Training Message box
* Lead indicator slew
* Fix HUD Message Head
* Correctly render messages
* Fix HUD offset handling
* HUD offset never makes any sense
* Cleanup offset code
* Remove unused parameter
* Fix Talking Head in RTT mode
Tracked down another Volition bug, first reported by recead. When messages do not have the ": " substring (which only happens when they are from MSG_SOURCE_NONE), they would calculate the wrong string size. This is because the two-character offset was added to the pointer *before* the pointer was checked for null, and so non-matches were considered matches with strings beginning at memory offset 2.
This moves towards defining the hooks in the code module that executes
them. Also provides the API necessary for better documentation of hooks.
This only covers a few hooks as a test and demonstration of the new API.
If no issues are found with this it can be extended in the future.
Removed a lot of unused functions.
This is mostly a cleanup of a prior refactoring.
There where a lot of unimplemented functions remaining from renaming.
Removed several outcommented parts of code.
This adds a mission file option for ships which allows specifying a
different string which should be used for displaying the name of the
ship to the user. This name will not be used in SEXPs or other ship
lookup functions so it can be freely translated and two ships can also
have the same display name.
The new feature can be used by adding $Display name: <string> after $Name
for a ship in a mission file. I think I added proper support for FRED
(and qtFRED) so that this new value is properly saved but it would be
great if someone could test that.
This implements one of the features requested in #1730.
This adds a new class which allows to create type safe resource handle
types. At the moment, the engine uses ints pretty much everywhere for
providing handles to resources created by the specific subsystems. Since
all ints are the same to the C/C++ typesystem it is perfectly legal to
pass a sound handle to the graphics API as a buffer handle which will
obviously cause issues.
This adds a new type called "ID" which is a wrapper class for a generic
handle but with added type safety. An instance of this class cannot be
passed to a function expecting another type of handle which provided
compile-time type safety for these APIs.
As an initial test I converted the game sound handles to this new type.
I already found a bug in the mainhall system thanks to this new type.
The mainhall used the game sound handles as sound instance handles which
probably meant that that specific code never really worked right. I
removed the code since there was no better alternative for fixing it.
Also added the "Center Text On Gauge X-Position:" option for the Fixed Messages gauge, which by default is enabled only if the gauge's position is not overridden.
