What do you want to see?
The mobile app is already pretty solid and well structured (bugs aside 😅), but what's really missing right now are notifications. Since it's a chat app, having proper notifications feels essential at this point. We don't have calls yet, and that's fine — but in my opinion, notifications should be the priority for now.
@alexjyong commented on GitHub (Jul 16, 2025):
I second this. It makes the app much more useful.
Going through the codebase (and I'm an amatuer android dev, so I might be off here) but looks like they were trying to set up Firebase for messages, but never really got off the ground (or is for a future time)
There is also a missing firebase config for this to run, which I presume is added elsewhere since I presume it has secrets in it that you can't save in a repo.

Without notifications, people will just join a server, see nothing going on, comes back after a few hours late, see that they missed what happened, and goes offline again to wait.
Just "install and forget" app

Hi there,
I wish a support for UnifiedPush if the notifications feature are being implemented for users who don't want to rely to google services.
The Firebase Cloud can be used as an backup, if there is no UnifiedPush distributor installed on the device.
It will be also very cool, if in the app settings there is an option to select the unified push distributor and switch between Firebase and UnifiedPush.
Here is a link from the UnifiedPush project. https://unifiedpush.org/ :D

Hi all, new Stoat user here.
I agree with the posts above, I find the lack of notifications to be a fairly pressing issue. I initially thought it was a bug because I was didn't think a chat app could exist without them.
For my use case: I'm almost always busy/multitasking and find it easy to forget about conversations while waiting for a reply. Notifications for mobile would be exceptionally helpful as it means I don't have to habitually check the app while having any conversation.
(To add to my last point, the app can be very slow or stall outright when loading messages after reopening. I'm not too fussed about it overall, but it does compound the frustration of needing to check the app frequently)
I think even a barebones temporary solution would be great if it means getting this feature sooner.
(N/R)
All that being said, having been hit by the recent surge of seemingly random discord account suspensions, I appreciate that this service exists. Thank you to the Stoat team for offering a free and easy alternative.

Hey, still think this should be prioritized.
The whole point of an app is to be available when not at a computer.

i also agree with all posts above, thats all imma say, they pretty much said everything that needed to be said
