What happened?
I'm unsure if this is an intentional choice or if this is a bug, but I can't mention myself when sending a message. I use this to put my handle in messages on information and rule channels to make it easy for users to click my name to message me and see what my display name is currently set to and have it always stay updated with whatever it is at the moment, since we tend to change our display name a lot for fun reasons in my RP's server.

I don't know if I understand this right or not, I just tested and had no issue mentioning myself in messages
From Test Account (Browser)
From Main Account (Desktop app)

I can't get it to work for myself. I'm using the web client in Firefox Developer edition 148.0b15 (64-bit) on Pop OS 24.04 LTS (Linux). If there's any other information I can provide to help troubleshoot, let me know?
@diziara commented on GitHub (Feb 15, 2026):
Oh, and to make sure it wasn't something I messed up with perms on my own server, I went to try it on another server too, and still no joy.
@diziara commented on GitHub (Feb 15, 2026):
Okay. Update. I can mention myself in my self note (also seeing the bug about mentioning people who aren't in the DM happening, but I'll go thumbs up that issue in a moment), but not in the server I created nor in the Stoat server.
@diziara commented on GitHub (Feb 15, 2026):
Okay, apologizes for a lot of replies here, in case you have email notifications turned on.
So, I can mention myself based on my display name, but not my user name, in both those servers. Is that intentional behavior, or should it allow me to mention by either?
@mihaicm93 commented on GitHub (Feb 15, 2026):
The original post made it sounded like self-mentions were completely broken, but after reading your updates: display-name self-mention works (as my tests showed), but username/handle self-mention doesn't autocomplete/insert in server channels on web. Is that the core issue?
To understand it better you would like to be able to use your username (Mihai#xxxx) for mentions instead of the Display Name wich changes based on server? Is that correct ?
@diziara commented on GitHub (Feb 15, 2026):
Admittedly, I'm coming over from Discord where I could use either to populate the auto-complete for a mention, and I typically used username because that didn't allow special characters and on my server we change our display names regularly so it was easier for me to remember my players username.
Ideally I would like for both to work. If that's not possible (or a low priority thing relative to other more pressing issues with the influx of new users), I'll adapt to using display name.

For now a workaround would be the following:
If you want to reach me you can do it by using -> `<@01KHEZ425HMA5JN9GEHCVXZ88Y>` so that will always target the same user without care for display name ( when you type the message make sure you include the backticks ` at the start and end otherwise it will tag you directly without providing your UserID
Here is how you can get the User ID
