<h2>Why Anonymity Matters</h2>
<p>Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a
distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around
the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet
connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents
the sites you visit from learning your physical location.
Tor works with many of your existing applications, including
web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and
other applications based on the TCP protocol.<br><span

<p>The Tor Project announces a <a href="<page
press/2011-08-28-tor-022-stable>">new stable release</a>
of the Tor software. More than two years in the making,
this release features improved client performance and
hidden service reliability, better compatibility for
Android, correct behavior for bridges that listen on more
than one address, more extensible and flexible directory
object handling, better reporting of network statistics,
improved code security, and many many other features
and bugfixes.</p>
