e751067179 replay: introduce breakpoint at the specified step
This patch introduces replay_break, replay_delete_break
qmp and hmp commands.
These commands allow stopping at the specified instruction.
It may be useful for debugging when there are some known
events that should be investigated.
replay_break command has one argument - number of instructions
executed since the start of the replay.
replay_delete_break removes previously set breakpoint.

56db1198a4 replay: provide an accessor for rr filename
This patch adds an accessor function for the name of the record/replay

740b175973 cpu-timers, icount: new modules
refactoring of cpus.c continues with cpu timer state extraction.

cpu-timers: responsible for the softmmu cpu timers state,
            including cpu clocks and ticks.

icount: counts the TCG instructions executed. As such it is specific to
the TCG accelerator. Therefore, it is built only under CONFIG_TCG.

One complication is due to qtest, which uses an icount field to warp time
as part of qtest (qtest_clock_warp).

In order to solve this problem, provide a separate counter for qtest.

This requires fixing assumptions scattered in the code that
qtest_enabled() implies icount_enabled(), checking each specific case.

677a3baba4 replay: synchronize on every virtual timer callback
Sometimes virtual timer callbacks depend on order
of virtual timer processing and warping of virtual clock.
Therefore every callback should be logged to make replay deterministic.
This patch creates a checkpoint before every virtual timer callback.
With these checkpoints virtual timers processing and clock warping
events order is completely deterministic.

ed5d7ff34a replay: fix replay shutdown for console mode
When QEMU is used without any graphical window,
QEMU execution is terminated with the signal (e.g., Ctrl-C).
Signal processing in QEMU does not include
qemu_system_shutdown_request call. That is why shutdown

This patch adds shutdown event to the end of the record log.
Now every replay will shutdown the machine at the end.

54d31236b9 sysemu: Split sysemu/runstate.h off sysemu/sysemu.h
sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator. Evidence:

* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).

* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.

Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.

Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400
to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects.

Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also
add qemu/main-loop.h.

ca9759c2a9 replay: don't process events at virtual clock checkpoint
As QEMU becomes more multi-threaded and non-synchronized, checkpoints
move from thread to thread. And the event queue that processed at checkpoints
should belong to the same thread in both record and replay executions.
This patch disables asynchronous event processing at virtual clock
checkpoint, because it may be invoked in different threads at record and
replay. This patch is temporary fix until the checkpoints are completely
refactored.

0c08185f8f replay: wake up vCPU when replaying
In record/replay icount mode vCPU thread and iothread synchronize
the execution using the checkpoints.
vCPU thread processes the virtual timers and iothread processes all others.
When iothread wants to wake up sleeping vCPU thread, it sends dummy queued
work. Therefore it could be the following sequence of the events in
record mode:
 - IO: sending dummy work
 - IO: processing timers
 - CPU: wakeup
 - CPU: clearing dummy work
 - CPU: processing virtual timers

But due to the races in replay mode the sequence may change:
 - IO: sending dummy work
 - CPU: wakeup
 - CPU: clearing dummy work
 - CPU: sleeping again because nothing to do
 - IO: Processing timers
 - CPU: zzzz

In this case vCPU will not wake up, because dummy work is not to be set up
again.

This patch tries to wake up the vCPU when it sleeps and the icount warp
checkpoint isn't met. It means that vCPU has something to do, because
there are no other reasons of non-matching warp checkpoint.

89e46eb477 replay: don't process async events when warping the clock
Virtual clock is warped from iothread and vcpu thread. When the hardware

d759c951f3 replay: push replay_mutex_lock up the call tree
Now instead of using the replay_lock to guard the output of the log we
now use it to protect the whole execution section. This replaces what
the BQL used to do when it was held during TCG execution.

We also introduce some rules for locking order - mainly that you
cannot take the replay_mutex while holding the BQL. This leads to some
slight sophistry during start-up and extending the
replay_mutex_destroy function to unlock the mutex without checking
for the BQL condition so it can be cleanly dropped in the non-replay
case.

cf83f14005 shutdown: Add source information to SHUTDOWN and RESET
Time to wire up all the call sites that request a shutdown or
reset to use the enum added in the previous patch.

It would have been less churn to keep the common case with no
arguments as meaning guest-triggered, and only modified the
host-triggered code paths, via a wrapper function, but then we'd
still have to audit that I didn't miss any host-triggered spots;
changing the signature forces us to double-check that I correctly
categorized all callers.

Since command line options can change whether a guest reset request
causes an actual reset vs. a shutdown, it's easy to also add the
information to reset requests.

802f045a5f shutdown: Preserve shutdown cause through replay
With the recent addition of ShutdownCause, we want to be able to pass
a cause through any shutdown request, and then faithfully replay that
cause when later replaying the same sequence. The easiest way is to
expand the reply event mechanism to track a series of values for
EVENT_SHUTDOWN, one corresponding to each value of ShutdownCause.

We are free to change the replay stream as needed, since there are
already no guarantees about being able to use a replay stream by
any other version of qemu than the one that generated it.

The cause is not actually fed back until the next patch changes the
signature for requesting a shutdown; a TODO marks that upcoming change.

Yes, this uses the gcc/clang extension of a ranged case label,
but this is not the first time we've used non-C99 constructs.

d9d3aaea0b replay: Fix dangling location bug in replay_configure()
replay_configure() pushes and pops a Location with automatic storage
duration. Except it fails to pop when -icount parameter "rr" isn't
given. cur_loc then points to unused stack space, and will most
likely get clobbered in short order.

Clobbered cur_loc can make loc_pop() and error_print_loc() crash or
report bogus locations.

Broken in commit 890ad55.

I didn't take the time to find a reproducer.

63785678f3 replay: introduce block devices record/replay
This patch introduces block driver that implement recording
and replaying of block devices' operations.
All block completion operations are added to the queue.
Queue is flushed at checkpoints and information about processed requests
is recorded to the log. In replay phase the queue is matched with
events read from the log. Therefore block devices requests are processed
deterministically.

da34e65cb4 include/qemu/osdep.h: Don't include qapi/error.h
Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.

Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.

Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.

This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

33577b47c6 replay: character devices
This patch implements record and replay of character devices.
It records chardevs communication in replay mode. Recorded information
include data read from backend and counter of bytes written
from frontend to backend to preserve frontend internal state.
If character device was configured through the command line in record mode,
then in replay mode it should be also added to command line. Backend of
the character device could be changed in replay mode.
Replaying of devices that perform ioctl and get_msgfd operations is not
supported.
gdbstub which also acts as a backend is not recorded to allow controlling
the replaying through gdb. Monitor backends are also not recorded.

followed by a replace of '%s"/*@@@*/' by '"' and some line rewrapping,
because I can't figure out how to make Coccinelle transform strings.

We now use the error whole instead of just its message obtained with
error_get_pretty(). This avoids suppressing its hint (see commit

come with hints.
