# P3-13 spike — Avalonia 12.1.4 GPU interop survey (OS × API matrix)
Date: 2026-11-04. Branch: `parity/p3-13-zero-copy-viewport`.
Rule-6 method: every type/member below was confirmed against the shipped
assemblies/XML docs in `~/.nuget/packages/avalonia/12.1.4/` (ref XML +
`strings` over `lib/net10.0/*.dll` + a `dotnet run` reflection probe in
`/tmp/avinspect`) — not from memory or the docs site. Avalonia version is
pinned: `Engine.EditorApp.csproj` / `Engine.EditorApp.Tests.csproj` both
reference `Avalonia` + `Avalonia.Desktop` `12.1.4`.
Prior art on this branch (already committed as `60ef522`, NOT this spike's
claim): `docs/notes/P3-13.md` + `GpuViewportBridge` +
`AvaloniaViewportInterop` + CPU bridge tests. This spike doc adds the
OS × API matrix, per-OS share path, and fallback conditions the
implementation consumes.
## Entry point (all OSes)
- `ElementComposition.GetElementVisual(host).Compositor` →
`await Compositor.TryGetCompositionGpuInterop()` →
`ICompositionGpuInterop` (`Avalonia.Base.xml`, reflection-confirmed).
- `null` return = no interop on this backend (headless/Skia/software) →
CPU fallback, no throw.
- Display: `Compositor.CreateDrawingSurface()` +
`CompositionDrawingSurface.{UpdateAsync, UpdateWithKeyedMutexAsync,
UpdateWithSemaphoresAsync, UpdateWithTimelineSemaphoresAsync}` +
`CompositionSurfaceVisual.Surface`, attached with
`ElementComposition.SetElementChildVisual` (all confirmed in
`Avalonia.Base.dll` reflection 2026-11-04).
## Query surface (never hardcode — ask the compositor at runtime)
- `ICompositionGpuInterop.SupportedImageHandleTypes` /
`SupportedSemaphoreTypes` (string lists from
`KnownPlatformGraphicsExternal{Image,Semaphore}HandleTypes`).
- `GetSynchronizationCapabilities(handleType)` →
`CompositionGpuImportedImageSynchronizationCapabilities`
(`Semaphores | KeyedMutex | Automatic | TimelineSemaphores`) — picks
which `Update*Async` overload to call.
- Import: `ImportImage(IPlatformHandle, PlatformGraphicsExternalImageProperties)`
(cross-device; `VulkanProperties.Layout` carries the `VkImageLayout` the
engine left the image in) and
`ImportImage(ICompositionImportableSharedGpuContextImage)` (same-GPU-context
fast path, no fd/NT-handle round-trip when engine and Avalonia share one
`VkDevice`). Same pair for semaphores.
- Lifetime: `ICompositionImportedObject.ImportCompleted` — once complete, the
caller may free the engine-side non-owning share handle. Keep the `VkImage`
alive until the `UpdateAsync` task completes.
- Health: `IsLost` (re-check per frame), `DeviceLuid`/`DeviceUuid`
(confirm same physical device before importing).
## OS × API matrix (Avalonia 12.1.4)
| OS | Compositor backend (shipped in NuGet) | Image handle types | Semaphore handle types | Engine export call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linux (X11/Wayland) | `Avalonia.Vulkan.dll` (`IVulkanExternalImage/Semaphore`, `VkImportMemoryFdInfoKHR`, `VkImportSemaphoreFdInfoKHR`) or `Avalonia.OpenGL.dll` (EGL `glImportMemoryFdEXT` / `glImportSemaphoreFdEXT`, `ICompositionImportableOpenGlSharedTexture`) | `VulkanOpaquePosixFileDescriptor` | `VulkanOpaquePosixFileDescriptor` | `vkGetMemoryFdKHR` (`VK_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_HANDLE_TYPE_OPAQUE_FD_BIT`), `vkGetSemaphoreFdKHR` |
| Windows | Vulkan NT-handle path (`VkImportMemoryWin32HandleInfoKHR`, `VkImportSemaphoreWin32HandleInfoKHR`) or D3D11 shared-handle path (ANGLE strings present in `Avalonia.OpenGL.dll`) | `VulkanOpaqueNtHandle`, `D3D11TextureNtHandle`, `D3D11TextureGlobalSharedHandle` | `VulkanOpaqueNtHandle`, `Direct3D12FenceNtHandle` | `vkGetMemoryWin32HandleKHR` (`OPAQUE_WIN32_BIT`) or `IDXGIResource1::CreateSharedHandle` (`D3D11_RESOURCE_MISC_SHARED_NTHANDLE`) |
| macOS | `Avalonia.Metal.dll` (`IMetalExternalObjectsFeature`, `IMetalExternalTexture`, `IMetalSharedEvent`) | `IOSurfaceRef` | `MetalSharedEvent` | MoltenVK export to IOSurface / `MTLSharedEvent` from `VkSemaphore` |
XML-doc notes that constrain the design:
- `D3D11TextureGlobalSharedHandle` (`IDXGIResource::GetSharedHandle`,
`D3D11_RESOURCE_MISC_SHARED[_KEYEDMUTEX]`): handle does NOT own the video
memory reference — the engine must keep the texture valid until import
completes.
- `IExternalObjectsHandleWrapRenderInterfaceContextFeature`: wrap
synchronously for MoltenVK `MTLSharedEvent`/IOSurface handles, which are
`__unsafe_unretained` — do not destroy the Vk source object first.
## Recommended share path per OS
- Linux: engine renders viewport to a dedicated `VkImage` created with
`VK_EXTERNAL_MEMORY_HANDLE_TYPE_OPAQUE_FD_BIT`, exports per frame with
`vkGetMemoryFdKHR`, `ImportImage(new PlatformHandle(fd,
VulkanOpaquePosixFileDescriptor), props)` → `UpdateAsync` (or the
semaphore/keyed-mutex/timeline variant per capabilities) on the Scene
panel's `CompositionDrawingSurface`. Preferred: same-`VkDevice`
`ICompositionImportableSharedGpuContextImage` when available (no fd).
- Windows: same shape with `OPAQUE_WIN32_BIT` NT handles; if the engine
renders via D3D11, `CreateSharedHandle` + `D3D11TextureNtHandle` (global
shared handle only for legacy `GetSharedHandle` textures).
- macOS: IOSurface-backed `VkImage` via MoltenVK → `IOSurfaceRef` import,
`MetalSharedEvent` for cross-queue sync; wrap synchronously per the XML
warning above.
Engine-side prerequisite (not yet in tree): `VulkanDevice::init` currently
enables no device extensions and has no external-memory allocation path —
the shareable image + `vkGetMemoryFdKHR/Win32HandleKHR` export must be
added behind the existing `enable_swapchain`-style flag pattern.
## Fallback conditions (CPU readback stays)
Use the `WriteableBitmap` lock/`InvalidateVisual` path (§4.5, ~2 ms per
1280×720 copy) whenever ANY of these hold:
1. `TryGetCompositionGpuInterop()` returns null (headless tests with
`UseHeadlessDrawing=false`, Skia/software compositor).
2. `IsLost` is true (check per frame; device loss mid-session).
3. `SupportedImageHandleTypes` lacks the engine's export type
(backend/handle mismatch — e.g. Vulkan-fd engine vs D3D11 compositor).
4. `ImportImage`/`Update*Async` throws.
5. `DeviceUuid`/`DeviceLuid` mismatch (engine and compositor on different
physical GPUs — import would fail or copy anyway).
6. `ENGINE_REQUIRE_GPU` unset / `SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=offscreen` headless runs.
Headless golden tests always take this path by construction (no compositor
exists), so the P3-13 golden half is unaffected by interop availability.
## What this host proves (2026-11-04)
- `/dev/dri`: `card0` + `renderD128` present, but `vulkaninfo` not
installed and `nvidia-smi` absent → lavapipe/software only, no real GPU.
- All type/member/handle-type claims above come from the 12.1.4 assemblies
on disk, verified this session. The 1920×1080 with/without-copy timing
comparison requires a real-GPU host with a compositor and is NOT claimed
here (see `docs/notes/P3-13.md` for the lavapipe fallback numbers and
the `engine_compositor_live` harness that prints both `[INFO]
viewport-timing` lines).

- State of the tree: `parity/p3-13-zero-copy-viewport` behind origin/main
by 1 commit (pre-existing); `git status` shows only the 4 P3-13 paths.
## Implementation delta (t_4444981d, this run)
- `managed/Engine.EditorApp/SceneViewportView.cs` (new): the missing
Avalonia viewport **control** — `Border` hosting an `Image` (panel
pattern, `Name = "Scene"` so the shell panel lookup still resolves).
Live ctor takes `(ViewportPresenter, GpuViewportBridge)`; headless/test
ctor takes neither. `PresentFrame()` presents through the bridge at the
control's `Bounds` (zero-copy returns true, no CPU bytes touched) and
blits `RenderToBuffer` bytes into a `WriteableBitmap` on the CPU path.
`IsFallbackForced`: `ENGINE_VIEWPORT_GPU=0` (tests) or
`SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=offscreen` (headless) forces CPU; guarded env reads
never throw. `ResolveInterop()` returns null under forced fallback or
when the headless compositor has no interop — the bridge's null-probe
rule then keeps every frame on the CPU path. `IDisposable` releases the
owned bitmap (CA1001 clean). `slnx build` 0w/0e.
- `managed/Engine.EditorApp.Tests/ViewportPanelGolden.cs` (new) +
`Program.cs` hook: 6 headless checks inside the existing shell session
(env toggle forces fallback, null interop resolves, presenter-less frame
stays CPU with no bitmap, `LastMode == CpuReadback`, never zero-copy,
`Name == "Scene"`). The control is never added to the shell window, so
`editor_shell_1280x720` golden still passes (verified).
- Verified this run: `dotnet build Engine.slnx` 0w/0e;
`EditorApp.Tests` headless — shell checks + golden PASS, 6/6 new
viewport-panel PASS; `Engine.Tests` viewport-bridge 11/11 PASS;
`dotnet format --verify-no-changes` clean. Real-GPU 1920x1080
with/without-copy comparison still needs a compositor host (pending —
left for qa-gate child t_3e21cbe1).
## Verification (t_3e21cbe1, qa-gate, 2026-11-04)
GPU used: `AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV GFX1151)` (discrete, `type=1`),
PCI `1002:1586` on `0000:bd:00.0` (`amdgpu`), PCIe x16 16 GT/s, kernel
`7.0.14-25-pve`. Raw Vulkan enumerate lists 2 devices (RADV + llvmpipe);
the engine's selector walks pass 1 (hint) → pass 2 (discrete) → pass 3
(first), so as the hermes user (no `video`/`render` groups) it picks
llvmpipe, and as root (via `sudo -n`, needed for `/dev/dri/renderD128`)
it picks the RADV discrete GPU. `ENGINE_REQUIRE_GPU=1` fails closed on
no-device (never SKIP); `SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=offscreen` is set for ctest.
### 1) 1920x1080 timing, real GPU (`engine_viewport_share`, sudo)
```text
[PASS] viewport-share: device init ok
device: AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV GFX1151)
[PASS] viewport-share: shareable image 1920x1080
[PASS] viewport-share: extent 1920x1080
[PASS] viewport-share: exported fd valid
exported fd: 6
[INFO] viewport-timing: with-copy avg 1168.955 ms over 10 frames at 1920x1080
[INFO] viewport-timing: without-copy avg 0.002 ms over 10 frames at 1920x1080
[PASS] viewport-share: CPU readback intact
VIEWPORT_SHARE_OK
```
Same binary as the hermes user (llvmpipe) for scale:
```text
device: llvmpipe (LLVM 19.1.7, 256 bits)
[INFO] viewport-timing: with-copy avg 3.237 ms over 10 frames at 1920x1080
[INFO] viewport-timing: without-copy avg 0.001 ms over 10 frames at 1920x1080
```
Acceptance verdict: **without-copy (0.002 ms) < with-copy (1168.955 ms)
— PASS** on the real GPU. The with-copy side is pathological here, and
the cause is instrumented, not guessed (all probes ran in scratch copies
of the test TU through the public `VulkanDevice::proc()` table — no
second volk copy — and were reverted; `git status` clean before notes):
- Empty one-shot submit+fence: 1.271 ms (queue is healthy).
- GPU `vkCmdFillBuffer` fill-rate ladder on device-local memory:
0.15 MB → 1.638 ms (first-submit cost), then 2.69 / 10.26 /
76.59 GB/s — the device copies fast.
- Bare `vkCmdCopyImageToBuffer` of the same 8.29 MB share image:
2.192 ms; `vkMapMemory` itself: 0.001–0.010 ms.
- Full-capture equivalent (barrier + copy + fence + map + byte loop)
assembled from public entry points: submit→fence 2.129 ms, map
0.004 ms, **byte-copy loop 1155.584 ms**.
- Reading the same staging mapping in 1 MB chunks: ~150 ms per MB,
every chunk, pass after pass (never warms: 4 consecutive full reads
1189/1164/1172/1164 ms vs a same-size RAM baseline of 1.628 ms).
- CPU write into the same GTT mapping is fast (0.546 ms); GPU copy
GTT→device-local is fast (0.254 ms). Only the CPU *read* stalls.
Root cause: on this host the driver's host-visible staging heap for the
discrete GPU maps **uncached** (`type[2]`, flags `0x6`, heap 0 = GTT;
no `HOST_COHERENT`-free cached type exists, so the noncoherent probe
reports none available). Every CPU load misses to GTT over the
Lenovo-proxy `/dev/dri` path at a flat ~7 MB/s (256x144 … 1920x1080 all
report 0.007 GB/s) while the GPU idles (`gpu_busy_percent` 0, clocks
pinned 2900 MHz `performance`). An APU Pool/AGP-style cached mapping is
not offered by this RADV/device combo, so `capture_rgba8`'s readback of
an 8 MB frame costs ~1.2 s here. That is a host/driver property, not a
regression: llvmpipe (system RAM staging) reads the same path at
3.237 ms, and the zero-copy half — fd export only, no pixel copy —
costs 0.002 ms on both devices, which is exactly the win P3-13 claims.
Production code path is unchanged by this finding (no fix attempted;
per rule 8 the numbers and the mechanism are recorded instead).
### 2) Headless goldens through the CPU fallback (this run)
- `dotnet build Engine.slnx -c Release`: 0 warnings, 0 errors.
- `SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=offscreen ENGINE_VIEWPORT_GPU=0 dotnet run --project
managed/Engine.EditorApp.Tests`: shell checks PASS,
`golden: editor_shell_1280x720` PASS, 6/6 `viewport-panel` PASS
(fallback forced, null interop, CPU bytes, CpuReadback, never
zero-copy, Scene name), exit 0.
- `dotnet run --project managed/Engine.Tests`: 692 PASS lines incl.
11/11 `viewport-bridge`, exit 0.
- `SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=offscreen ENGINE_REQUIRE_GPU=1 ctest --preset
ci-linux`: **81/81 PASS** incl. `engine_viewport_share` (llvmpipe
fd-export path), 0 failures.
### 3) CI / review gates
- PR #209 (`parity/p3-13-zero-copy-viewport`) is **MERGED** (2026-11-04):
all matrix jobs SUCCESS (native clang+gcc × linux, macOS, Windows;
managed × all three OSes; CodeQL, Analyze C++; SonarCloud SUCCESS;
CodeRabbit NEUTRAL), no open review threads.
- Follow-up caveat for the record: the remote branch has since moved
past this worktree (`origin/parity/p3-13-zero-copy-viewport` = 60ef522
behind; this worktree = e84c704 ahead by 3) — the notes commit below
lands on the worktree tip; rebase/merge is the owner's call.

// (ICompositionGpuInterop.ImportImage), which imports it without a copy.
//
// This header exposes that native half:
// ViewportShare — owns a VkImage at a fixed extent whose backing
// memory was allocated with export info, and exports one OS handle
// per share() call. Linux: opaque POSIX fd (the type Avalonia's
// VulkanOpaquePosixFileDescriptor import consumes). Ownership passes
// to the caller: each returned fd must be closed (or handed to the
// compositor import) by the caller; the image stays alive across
// share() calls. When the driver lacks external-memory support,
// create() fails closed (kUnsupported) — the CPU readback path
// (capture_rgba8) stays the default and is untouched.
// ShareHandle — the exported OS handle (fd on Linux, -1 invalid).
//
// Threading: single render thread only (same rule as the upload ring).
// VulkanDevice enables VK_KHR_external_memory(+_fd) only when BOTH
// requested (DeviceCreateInfo::enable_external_memory) AND advertised;
// create() gates on VulkanDevice::external_memory_enabled() and fails
// closed (kUnsupported) before probing formats or touching images, so
// vkGetMemoryFdKHR is never called on a device without the export path.
// It then probes the exportable format BEFORE vkCreateImage (unsupported
// -> kUnsupported, never kDeviceCreateFailed) and share() resolves the
// entry point through VulkanDevice::proc()/instance_proc() (gotcha 11:
// no second volk copy in consumers).
// When ENGINE_RENDERER_HAS_VULKAN is undefined the class compiles to a
// stub whose create() reports kVulkanLoaderFailed.
