fix the case where the char stream impl reallocated its buffer to accomodate data > 256 bytes. mLength wasn't set (at all) so the memcpy() copied nothing into the new buffer.

the problem here is that when you use -CreateProfile, prefs don't get
initialized correctly, and you don't get a prefs.js file! this causes
all sorts of problems, as you might imagine.
addition code cleanup, too.
