MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 323b37bdfc fix(review): adopt every documented backend protocol, not just get_response
Review found the Agent(llm=<object>) fix was incomplete, and it was right.
Verified by running it:

    chat_completion-only backend -> self.llm=<object>  custom=False   BUG
    get_response backend         -> self.llm="custom/..." custom=True  ok

llm/protocols.py documents two more backend surfaces besides get_response:
LLMProviderProtocol via chat/achat, and UnifiedLLMProtocol via
chat_completion/achat_completion. A backend implementing either still fell
through to the plain OpenAI branch, where the object became the model
identifier and the turn went to the wrong backend -- the same defect the
branch was added to fix, for a different protocol.

Detection now duck-types across all of them. Five tests, including two
controls: a plain object with no backend method is still NOT adopted, and a
string llm is unaffected.

MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 4b3449f423 chore(parity): waive the two new tool() guardrail parameters, with an expiry
CI's signatures gate failed on tool().input_guardrails and
tool().output_guardrails: both are new Python parameters with no
TypeScript counterpart.

These waivers are marked NOT an equivalence. Every other reason in
waivers.yaml documents two SDKs reaching the same result by different
routes, validated by running both. These record a real gap instead --
nothing in praisonai-ts resolves the same behaviour. They exist only to
unblock this PR, because porting is a praisonai-ts change and the two
packages do not share a branch.

Both carry expires: 2026-12-07. An expired waiver fails the check, so if
the TypeScript port is forgotten the gate goes red rather than the gap
quietly becoming permanent.

praisonai-triage-agent[bot]andMervin Praison 94da4aa6c6 fix: block model requests by scope depth, not a shared snapshot
no_model_requests() saved and restored the single _allowed boolean, so two
overlapping scopes (or cross-thread scopes) could re-enable requests while
another scope was still open, leaking a real provider call. Track active
scopes with a counter instead: requests stay blocked until every open scope
exits. Adds regression tests for overlapping and globally-allowed cases.

MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 0fe844a726 feat: per-tool guardrails
Guardrails were agent-wide: _tool_call_guardrails / _tool_result_guardrails
are fed only from Agent(guardrails=...) and fire for every tool. Approvals
gate calls interactively. Nothing sat between them, so validating one
tool's arguments -- rejecting a send_email whose recipient is off-domain --
meant hand-wrapping the function.

Adds input and output guardrails scoped to a single tool, declared
alongside the approval and trust options a tool already carries. An input
guardrail sees the arguments before the tool runs and may block or rewrite
them; an output guardrail may block or substitute the result. A blocked
call feeds a message back to the model rather than raising at the user.

Built on the existing GuardrailResult and GuardrailChain rather than a
second guardrail system, so there is one vocabulary for a validation
outcome. Ordering relative to the approval gate and the trust fence is
chosen for safety and documented at the call site.

MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 b6b0f19cff chore(parity): regenerate tracker for the new Python exports
Merging the three fixes made the tracker stale in a way none of the
individual branches showed: each was regenerated before the others
existed. Records 6 praisonai-ts gaps (GuardrailRetry plus the five
model_harness test-double exports), up from 0.

Recorded rather than avoided. Withholding the exports to keep the count
at zero would game the measurement instead of reporting it; Python is the
source of truth and TypeScript follows in a separate PR, which is exactly
the state this tracker exists to make visible.

MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 59369664c4 fix: feed guardrail rejections back into the live conversation
_apply_guardrail_with_retry already retried on validation failure, but it
threw the conversation away: on rejection it built one fresh user message,
prompt + "Note: Previous response failed validation due to: ...", and sent
that alone. The system prompt, retrieved context, tool results and the
rejected answer never reached the retry. Proven against pristine code --
the second request was a single-element message list.

So the missing capability was never retry; it was feedback into the live
conversation. The retry now appends the rejected assistant turn plus the
reason as a user turn and re-calls with the full history, bounded by the
max_guardrail_retries that already existed. No competing setting is added.

Validators signal rejection the way they already could, by returning
(False, reason). GuardrailRetry is added for validators whose check fails
several frames down -- a Pydantic parse, a lookup helper -- whose message
was previously mangled into "Agent guardrail validation error: ...".

The whole-task layer had the same disease: AgentTeam re-ran tasks with the
identical prompt, logging the guardrail reason and dropping it. It now
fills the Task.validation_feedback slot that already existed, so
Process._build_task_context renders it into the re-run. Reuse of existing
wiring, not new wiring.

Two fixes fell out: the retry passed stream=True regardless of agent
config (the sync path logged an ERROR and fell back on every retry), and
GuardrailChain buried the rejection under "Guardrail error: ...".

Regenerates the parity tracker, which records GuardrailRetry as a new
praisonai-ts gap (count 0 -> 1) pending a TypeScript follow-up.

MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 f6788b2db7 feat: scriptable test model and a no-network guard
Nothing shipped let a user unit-test an agent offline. The repo's own
pattern is hand-rolled per test -- LLM.__new__(LLM) followed by assigning
twelve private methods -- repeated across three files.

ScriptedModel subclasses the real LLM and replaces only the
provider-facing methods, so system-prompt assembly, tool-schema
serialisation, the tool-execution loop, tool-result messages, streaming
and async all run production code. Replies are real litellm
ModelResponse objects, parsed by the same path as a live response, so the
double cannot drift from reality. It records requests, scripts tool calls,
and raises ScriptExhausted rather than hanging or inventing a reply.

allow_model_requests(False) blocks every real provider call at the 6
litellm request sites and both OpenAI client properties, and names the
offending call site -- which needed a frame walk, since requests are
dispatched through an asyncio loop on a worker thread.

Fixes a bug found while building this: Agent(llm=<model object>) fell
through every branch to the plain OpenAI path, leaving self.llm set to
the object itself and _using_custom_llm False, so every turn went to
OpenAI under a model name that was really a repr(). Passing your own
model did the opposite of what it means.

Both new error types derive from BaseException on purpose: the tool
loop's broad `except Exception` would otherwise turn "your script is one
reply short" into a silent None return.

MervinPraisonandClaude Opus 5 ac9006edc0 fix: never drop an attachment silently
_build_multimodal_prompt matched five image extensions and had no else
branch, so agent.chat(attachments=["report.pdf"]) appended nothing -- no
part, no warning, no error. The model answered from the text prompt alone
and the caller could not tell the file was ignored. A mistyped path
failed just as quietly, as did pathlib.Path attachments, directories,
non-image URLs, non-image data: URIs and video.

Routing moves to praisonaiagents/agent/attachments.py with one invariant:
an attachment either becomes a model-visible content part or produces a
loud signal. The split is on who can act on it, not on severity.

Addressing errors raise AttachmentError (a ValueError subclass, so
existing handlers still catch): the path does not exist, is a directory,
is unreadable, or is not a str/PathLike/dict. These are always caller
mistakes and there is no useful degraded answer -- continuing means the
model confidently discussing a document it never saw. The message names
the path and the cwd, since a relative path resolved from an unexpected
directory is the usual cause.

Capability limits warn and degrade visibly: the file is readable but the
target model cannot ingest that type. A logging.warning names the file,
model and remedy, AND a marker part is injected into the prompt so the
model knows too and can say it answered without the file. A log line
alone would still leave the answer looking complete.

PDF, audio and ~45 text/code extensions are now routed per model
capability via new supports_pdf_input / supports_audio_input /
supports_vision helpers. PDF degrades by local text extraction, labelled
as such. Images are unchanged, byte for byte.

They are fully actionable at the call site, there is no useful degraded
answer, and continuing would produce a confident answer about a file the
model never saw. Raising is the only way the caller can tell.
``warn + visible degrade`` -- *capability* limits: the file is there and
readable, but the target model cannot ingest that media type. The run can
still be useful, so we log a warning **and** put a marker part in the
prompt so the model itself knows a file was withheld or converted and can
say so. This is environmental, not a bug in the caller's code, and hard
failing would make a model swap a breaking change.
Escape hatches (both default to the behaviour described above):
- ``PRAISONAI_ATTACHMENTS_ON_MISSING=warn`` downgrades the missing/unreadable
raise to a warning + visible marker part.
- ``PRAISONAI_ATTACHMENTS_STRICT=1`` escalates capability degrades to raises,
for pipelines that would rather fail than get a partial answer.
Part shapes emitted (OpenAI/LiteLLM chat-completions style):
- image -> ``{"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": "data:...;base64,..."}}``
- pdf native -> ``{"type": "file", "file": {"filename": ..., "file_data": "data:application/pdf;base64,..."}}``
- audio -> ``{"type": "input_audio", "input_audio": {"data": "<b64>", "format": "mp3"}}``
- text/degraded/withheld -> ``{"type": "text", "text": "[Attachment: ...] ..."}``

This is a DRY helper used by chat/achat/run/arun/start/astart.
Attachments are ephemeral - only text is stored in history.
Routing lives in ``praisonaiagents.agent.attachments``. The contract is
that an attachment is **never dropped silently**: a bad path raises
:class:`~praisonaiagents.agent.attachments.AttachmentError`, and a file
the target model cannot ingest is logged as a warning *and* replaced
with a visible marker part (or a locally extracted text form) so both
the caller and the model know what happened.
Args:
prompt: Text query (ALWAYS stored in chat_history)
attachments: Image/file paths for THIS turn only (NEVER stored)
attachments: Image/document/audio paths, URLs, or content-part
dicts for THIS turn only (NEVER stored)
Returns:
Either a string (no attachments) or multimodal message list
Raises:

this runs LAST on the way in - after the human approval gate, after the
agent-wide PolicyEngine, and after any agent-wide tool-call guardrail -
so it sits immediately before dispatch. That is the safest order for two
reasons:
1. Nothing can rewrite the arguments between this verdict and the call.
A guardrail that approved ``send_email([email protected])`` and then
had the arguments rewritten underneath it would be a guardrail in
name only, and the rewrite is exactly the capability an attacker-
steered agent-wide component would reach for. "The tool never runs
with arguments its own guardrail did not see" is the whole promise of
this feature, so it is the invariant that gets protected.
2. Human approval stays *upstream* of every automated rewrite. The human
is auditing what the MODEL proposed; if a guardrail could sanitise
the arguments first, an approval prompt would show a call the model
never made, and a rewriting guardrail could launder a call past human
review.
Returns an error dict when blocked (never raises), or ``(None, arguments)``
with the possibly-rewritten arguments when allowed. Zero overhead for
tools that declared no guardrail: one attribute read, then out.

truncation. Mirroring the input side, the per-tool guardrail is the
layer closest to the tool in both directions:
* It sees the RAW result. If the trust fence ran first, every guardrail
would have to parse and strip ``<external_tool_result>`` markers to
find the content it cares about, and a guardrail that redacts by
rewriting could damage or forge the fence.

finally allow, so a substituted result is fenced exactly like an

"""Per-tool guardrails: validate the arguments and the result of ONE tool.
PraisonAI already had guardrails at two scopes and nothing in between:
* ``Agent(guardrail=...)`` / ``Task(guardrail=...)`` validate the **final

* The agent-wide tool surface (``_tool_call_guardrails`` /
``_tool_result_guardrails``, fed from a ``GuardrailProtocol`` object passed to
``Agent(guardrails=...)``) fires for **every tool** the agent can reach.
* ``approval`` gates a tool call on a **human**, interactively.
None of those let a tool author say "*this one* tool must never be called with a
recipient outside the company domain". Doing it today meant policing every tool
through interactive approval, or hand-wrapping the function body. This module
adds the missing scope, declared on the tool itself next to ``approval`` and

The guardrail fires on every invocation of ``send_email`` and never for any

What a guardrail function receives and returns
----------------------------------------------
An **input** guardrail takes one positional argument, the ``arguments`` dict the
model proposed. An **output** guardrail takes one positional argument, the raw
result the tool returned. Both use the ``(success, value)`` tuple convention
already used everywhere else in this package (``Agent(guardrail=fn)``,
``GuardrailProtocol``):
* ``(True, value)`` - allow; ``value`` replaces the arguments/result, so a
guardrail can **rewrite** (sanitise arguments, redact a secret out of a
result). ``(True, None)`` allows the original through unchanged.
* ``(False, "reason")`` - block. The reason is handed back to the **model** as
the tool result so it can react and try something else; it is never raised at
the user.
* A bare ``True`` / ``False`` works too, as does a
:class:`~praisonaiagents.guardrails.GuardrailResult`.
* ``None`` (a validator that only ever returns ``False`` to object, and falls
off the end otherwise) means "no opinion" - allow unchanged. The deny path is
explicit, so nothing is lost by being permissive here.
* Anything else is a contract violation and **fails closed**: an unreadable
verdict is not an approval.
A guardrail that raises also fails closed, matching ``GuardrailChain``'s
default. Pass an object exposing ``validate_tool_call`` / ``validate_tool_result``
(any ``GuardrailProtocol`` implementation, including a ``GuardrailChain``) to
reuse an existing guardrail unchanged.

"""Global guard that blocks real model requests.
A test suite that stubs the model in *most* places still bills a provider (and
goes flaky) the moment one path slips through. This module is the single switch
that turns that silent slip into a loud failure::
from praisonaiagents.model_harness import allow_model_requests
# conftest.py -- nothing in this suite may reach a provider
allow_model_requests(False)
Once blocked, the two request paths an :class:`~praisonaiagents.agent.Agent`
uses -- ``LLM``/LiteLLM (Chat Completions and Responses, sync, async and
streaming) and the OpenAI-native client -- raise :class:`ModelRequestBlocked`
before any network I/O, and the message names the call site in *your* code that
triggered it.
Scope: this covers the agent's own turn-taking. Auxiliary model calls made by
other subsystems (memory scoring, embeddings) hold their own clients and are
not routed through these two paths.
A :class:`~praisonaiagents.model_harness.ScriptedModel` answers from its script
without touching either path, so scripted tests keep passing while the guard is
on. That is the intended pairing: block globally, script explicitly.
The initial state can also be set from the environment, which is handy for CI
without touching test code::
PRAISONAI_ALLOW_MODEL_REQUESTS=0 pytest
Design note -- why :class:`BaseException`: the agent's tool loop wraps model
calls in broad ``except Exception`` handlers that degrade a failure into a
``None`` result. A guard that can be swallowed is not a guard, so this error
follows the precedent pytest sets with its own outcome exceptions and derives
from ``BaseException``.

what an agent *does* -- "given this user turn, it calls ``refund()`` and then

patching of provider internals.
It is a real :class:`~praisonaiagents.llm.llm.LLM` subclass that replaces the
methods which talk to a provider and nothing else, so everything around the
call is the production code path: the system prompt is assembled normally,
tools are serialised to real schemas, scripted tool calls are dispatched
through the agent's own executor, and results are fed back as real tool
messages. Replies are built as genuine litellm response objects, so they are
parsed by the same code a live response would be.

A guardrail could already say "no, because X", but that reason only ever reached
the model as a brand-new one-message request - original prompt plus a note -
with the system prompt, context and the rejected answer itself all thrown away.
These tests pin the in-run correction loop:
* a validator that rejects once costs exactly two model calls and returns the
corrected answer (control: a passing validator costs exactly one);
* the rejection text is in the second request, appended to the *same*
conversation after the rejected assistant turn (control: it appears nowhere
in the first request, and nowhere at all when validation passes);
* a validator that always rejects stops at ``max_guardrail_retries`` with an
error naming the bound and the last reason (control: the identical setup
with a satisfiable validator succeeds within the same bound).

PraisonAI could validate an agent's FINAL output (``Agent(guardrail=...)``) and

between: there was no way to attach a validator to ONE tool. These tests cover
the new scope end to end.
Every positive is paired with a control:
* an input guardrail blocks a call -> the tool never executes, and the rejection
reaches the model (control: the same tool with allowed arguments runs and its
real output reaches the model)
* an input guardrail rewrites arguments -> the tool sees the rewritten ones
(control: an identical unguarded tool sees the originals)
* an output guardrail substitutes a result (control: a pass-through guardrail
leaves it alone)
* a guardrail on tool A does not fire for tool B (control: A's own call does
fire it)
* an unguarded tool is entirely unaffected
Plus the documented ordering against the approval gate, the agent-wide

reason: NOT an equivalence -- unlike every other waiver in this file, this records a real
gap. Per-tool input guardrails were added to Python (praisonaiagents/guardrails/tool_guardrails.py)
and have no TypeScript counterpart yet; nothing in praisonai-ts resolves the same behaviour by
another route. Waived only to unblock the Python PR, since porting is a praisonai-ts change and
the two packages do not share a branch. `expires` is set deliberately so this fails the gate
rather than becoming permanent if the port is forgotten.
