Mervin Praison c3d60c82ca feat: add debug output with token/cost metrics
- Added llm_end callback to openai_client.py and llm.py with:
  - tokens_in, tokens_out from usage
  - cost from litellm.completion_cost()
  - latency_ms timing
- Updated trace.py and status.py to display metrics
- Added show_metrics param to enable debug mode metrics display
- Agent.py passes metrics flag to enable_status_output

Debug output now shows:
  [17:18:22] Calling LLM (gpt-4o-mini)...
  [17:18:24]   │ 📊 gpt-4o-mini: 104→14 tokens [1.5s]
  [17:18:24] ▸ get_weather(city='Tokyo')
  [17:18:24] Calling LLM (gpt-4o-mini)...
  [17:18:25]   │ 📊 gpt-4o-mini: 133→8 tokens [0.7s]
  Response: The weather in Tokyo is sunny.

Mervin Praison 8c509b439f Release v3.8.16 2026-01-13 16:55:40 +00:00
Mervin Praison 3fbf1a353e fix: consistent status output for all LLM paths (OpenAI + LiteLLM)
- Fixed _execute_callback_and_display to always trigger callback
  (removed incorrect 'if not _using_custom_llm' guard)
- Added tool_call callback to llm.py for LiteLLM path
- Removed duplicate llm_start callback from llm.py method entry
- Reset AI call counter between agent runs
- Both sync LLM paths now show identical output

Verified output for both paths:
  ▸ AI → thinking...
    │ → get_weather(city="Tokyo") → sunny
  ▸ AI → responding...
  Final Output: ...
2026-01-13 16:45:08 +00:00
Mervin Praison e0f3a49e41 improve: status output UX - cleaner, user-friendly format
- Changed 'LLM' to 'AI' for user-friendliness
- Added context: 'thinking' (1st call) / 'responding' (2nd call)
- Tool calls now show inline with result: │ → tool(args) → result
- Fixed openai_client to pass structured params to callbacks

Output now looks like:
  ▸ AI → thinking...
    │ → get_weather(city="Tokyo") → sunny
  ▸ AI → responding...
  Final Output: ...
2026-01-13 16:36:51 +00:00
Mervin Praison 987b43877f fix: show all LLM calls in status output (including tool follow-ups)
- Added llm_start callback in openai_client.py while loop
- Each LLM API call now triggers callback for status display
- Removed duplicate callback from agent._chat_completion

Status output now correctly shows:
  ▸ Calling LLM (gpt-4o-mini)... # 1st: decides to call tool
  │ → get_weather(city="Tokyo")
  ▸ Calling LLM (gpt-4o-mini)...       # 2nd: generates response
  Final Output: ...
2026-01-13 16:18:53 +00:00
Mervin Praison ebb383208e feat: add LLM call display to status/trace output
- Added llm_start callback in agent._chat_completion()
- Registered on_llm_start callback in enable_status_output()
- StatusOutput.llm_start() displays '▸ Calling LLM (model)...'
- Works for both LiteLLM and OpenAI client paths

Status output now shows:
  ▸ Calling LLM (openai/gpt-4o-mini)...
  │ → get_weather(city="Tokyo")
  Final Output: ...
2026-01-13 16:10:46 +00:00
Mervin Praison c9e4f0738a refactor: rename output modules for user-friendliness
- Rename actions.py → status.py (handles status preset, no timestamps)
- Rename old status.py → trace.py (handles trace preset, with timestamps)
- ActionsSink → StatusOutput
- StatusSink → TraceOutput
- enable_actions_mode → enable_status_output
- enable_status_mode → enable_trace_output

This makes internal code match user-facing preset names:
  output='status' → StatusOutput (▸ tool → result)
  output='trace' → TraceOutput ([HH:MM:SS] ▸ tool [0.2s])
2026-01-13 15:59:42 +00:00
Mervin Praison db0a24555d fix: status preset correctly hides timestamps, add LLM call methods
- Added show_timestamps param to ActionsSink (default True)
- Agent passes show_timestamps=False for status preset (simple_output=True)
- Added llm_start/llm_end methods to ActionsSink for future LLM tracking
- status: │ → tool() (no timestamps)
- trace: [HH:MM:SS] ▸ tool [0.2s] ✓ (with timestamps)
2026-01-13 15:51:51 +00:00
Mervin Praison e3fe35e2b6 fix: status preset now hides timestamps correctly
- Added show_timestamps param to ActionsSink
- Agent passes show_timestamps=False when simple_output=True
- status: │ → tool() (no timestamps)
- trace: [HH:MM:SS] ▸ tool [0.2s] ✓ (with timestamps)
2026-01-13 15:46:57 +00:00
Mervin Praison 74a7322b83 refactor: rename output presets for clarity
- Rename 'text' → 'status' (no timestamps, simple progress)
- Rename old 'status' → 'trace' (with timestamps, full trace)
- Change 'debug' = trace + metrics (no boxes, developer-focused)
- Keep 'verbose' = rich panels (interactive use)
- Add 'text' as backward compat alias → status

New hierarchy (most intuitive):
  silent → status → trace → debug → verbose → stream → json

- Added _has_explicit_output_config flag to track when user sets output=
- Modified agent.start() to skip TTY auto-verbose if user explicitly configured output
- Fixes issue where output='status' was overridden by TTY auto-verbose showing panels

Before: output='status' in TTY showed panels (wrong)
After: output='status' in TTY shows clean inline status (correct)

# Attention Is All You Need
## Abstract
The dominant sequence transduction models are based on complex recurrent or
convolutional neural networks that include an encoder and a decoder. The best
performing models also connect the encoder and decoder through an attention
mechanism. We propose a new simple network architecture, the Transformer,
based solely on attention mechanisms, dispensing with recurrence and convolutions
entirely.
## Introduction
Recurrent neural networks, long short-term memory and gated recurrent neural
networks in particular, have been firmly established as state of the art
approaches in sequence modeling and transduction problems such as language
modeling and machine translation.
## Background
The goal of reducing sequential computation also forms the foundation of the
Extended Neural GPU, ByteNet and ConvS2S, all of which use convolutional neural
networks as basic building block.
## Model Architecture
### Encoder and Decoder Stacks
The encoder is composed of a stack of N = 6 identical layers. Each layer has
two sub-layers. The first is a multi-head self-attention mechanism, and the
second is a simple, position-wise fully connected feed-forward network.
### Attention
An attention function can be described as mapping a query and a set of key-value
pairs to an output, where the query, keys, values, and output are all vectors.
#### Scaled Dot-Product Attention
We call our particular attention "Scaled Dot-Product Attention". The input
consists of queries and keys of dimension dk, and values of dimension dv.
The formula is: Attention(Q, K, V) = softmax(QK^T / sqrt(d_k))V
### Multi-Head Attention
Multi-head attention allows the model to jointly attend to information from
different representation subspaces at different positions.
## Results
### Machine Translation
On the WMT 2014 English-to-German translation task, the big transformer model
outperforms the best previously reported models including ensembles.
The model achieved a BLEU score of 28.4 on the WMT 2014 English-to-German
translation task, improving over the existing best results by over 2 BLEU.
On the WMT 2014 English-to-French translation task, our big model achieves
a BLEU score of 41.8, outperforming all published single models.
### Training
Training took 3.5 days on 8 P100 GPUs. The big model was trained for 300,000
steps (3.5 days) at a cost of approximately $1000 in cloud compute.
## Model Variations
| Model | Parameters | BLEU EN-DE | BLEU EN-FR |
|-------|------------|------------|------------|
| Base | 65M | 27.3 | 38.1 |
| Big | 213M | 28.4 | 41.8 |
The base model has 65 million parameters (65 × 10^6).
The big model has 213 million parameters.
## Conclusion
In this work, we presented the Transformer, the first sequence transduction
model based entirely on attention, replacing the recurrent layers most commonly
used in encoder-decoder architectures with multi-headed self-attention.
The Transformer can be trained significantly faster than architectures based
on recurrent or convolutional layers.
