Bjorn Pettersson 4b8314b0f0 [DebugInfo] Do not extend range for physreg in LiveDebugVariables
Summary:
A DBG_VALUE that is referring to a physical register is
valid up until the next def of the register, or the end
of the basic block that it belongs to.

LiveDebugVariables is computing live intervals (slot index
ranges) for DBG_VALUE instructions, before regalloc, in order
to be able to re-insert DBG_VALUE instructions again after
regalloc. When the DBG_VALUE is mapping a variable to a
physical register we do not need to compute the range. We
should simply re-insert the DBG_VALUE at the start position.

The problem that was found, resulting in this patch, was a
situation when the DBG_VALUE was the last real use of the
physical register. The computeIntervals/extendDef methods
extended the range to cover the whole basic block, even though
the physical register very well could be allocated to some
virtual register inside the basic block. So the extended
range could not be trusted.

This patch is a preparation for https://reviews.llvm.org/D38229,
where the goal is to insert DBG_VALUE after each new definition
of a variable, even if the virtual registers that the variable
was connected to has been coalesced into using the same physical
register (e.g. due to two address instructions). For more info

Jonas Devlieghere 45b741c841 [dwarfdump] Add verbose output for .debug-line section
This patch adds dumping of line table instructions as well as the final
state at each specified pc value in verbose mode. This is essentially
the same as the default in Darwin's dwarfdump. Dumping the actual line
table opcodes can be particularly useful for something like debugging a
bad `.debug_line` section.

Adrian Prantl 8e66c2eabb llvm-dwarfdump: Replace -debug-dump=sect option with individual options.
As discussed on llvm-dev in
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2017-September/117301.html
this changes the command line interface of llvm-dwarfdump to match the
one used by the dwarfdump utility shipping on macOS. In addition to
being shorter to type this format also has the advantage of allowing
more than one section to be specified at the same time.

In a nutshell, with this change

  $ llvm-dwarfdump --debug-dump=info
  $ llvm-dwarfdump --debug-dump=apple-objc

becomes

  $ dwarfdump --debug-info --apple-objc

Adrian Prantl 69e607f200 Canonicalize the representation of empty an expression in DIGlobalVariableExpression
This change simplifies code that has to deal with
DIGlobalVariableExpression and mirrors how we treat DIExpressions in
debug info intrinsics. Before this change there were two ways of
representing empty expressions on globals, a nullptr and an empty
!DIExpression().

If someone needs to upgrade out-of-tree testcases:
  perl -pi -e 's/(!DIGlobalVariableExpression\(var: ![0-9]*)\)/\1, expr: !DIExpression())/g' <MYTEST.ll>
will catch 95%.

Reid Kleckner e6c9ef369c [dwarfdump] Pretty print location expressions and location lists
Summary:
Based on Fred's patch here: https://reviews.llvm.org/D6771

I can't seem to commandeer the old review, so I'm creating a new one.

With that change the locations exrpessions are pretty printed inline in the
DIE tree. The output looks like this for debug_loc entries:

    DW_AT_location [DW_FORM_data4]        (0x00000000
       0x0000000000000001 - 0x000000000000000b: DW_OP_consts +3
       0x000000000000000b - 0x0000000000000012: DW_OP_consts +7
       0x0000000000000012 - 0x000000000000001b: DW_OP_reg0 RAX, DW_OP_piece 0x4
       0x000000000000001b - 0x0000000000000024: DW_OP_breg5 RDI+0)

And like this for debug_loc.dwo entries:
    DW_AT_location [DW_FORM_sec_offset]   (0x00000000
      Addr idx 2 (w/ length 190): DW_OP_consts +0, DW_OP_stack_value
      Addr idx 3 (w/ length 23): DW_OP_reg0 RAX, DW_OP_piece 0x4)

Simple locations without ranges are printed inline:

   DW_AT_location [DW_FORM_block1]       (DW_OP_reg4 RSI, DW_OP_piece 0x4, DW_OP_bit_piece 0x20 0x0)

The debug_loc(.dwo) dumping in changed accordingly to factor the code.

Reid Kleckner a5b2af0eae Parse and print DIExpressions inline to ease IR and MIR testing

Most DIExpressions are empty or very simple. When they are complex, they
tend to be unique, so checking them inline is reasonable.

NoVReg is set after instruction selection while the machine instructions
still contain virtual registers, causing expensive checks to fail.

Adrian Prantl e97626f472 Improve the accuracy of variable ranges .debug_loc location lists.
For the following motivating example
  bool c();
  void f();
  bool start() {
    bool result = c();
    if (!c()) {
      result = false;
      goto exit;
    }
    f();
    result = true;
  exit:
    return result;
  }

we would previously generate a single DW_AT_const_value(1) because
only the DBG_VALUE in the second-to-last basic block survived
codegen. This patch improves the heuristic used to determine when a
DBG_VALUE is available at the beginning of its variable's enclosing
lexical scope:

- Stop giving singular constants blanket permission to take over the
  entire scope. There is still a special case for constants in the
  function prologue that we also miight want to retire later.

- Use the lexical scope information to determine available-at-entry
  instead of proximity to the function prologue.

After this patch we generate a location list with a more accurate
narrower availability for the constant true value. As a pleasant side
effect, we also generate inline locations instead of location lists
where a loacation covers the entire range of the enclosing lexical
scope.

Measured on compiling llc with four targets this doesn't have an
effect on compile time and reduces the size of the debug info for llc
by ~600K.

Florian Hahn 50963b3b75 Align definition of DW_OP_plus with DWARF spec [3/3]
Summary:
This patch is part of 3 patches that together form a single patch, but must be introduced in stages in order not to break things.

The way that LLVM interprets DW_OP_plus in DIExpression nodes is basically that of the DW_OP_plus_uconst operator since LLVM expects an unsigned constant operand. This unnecessarily restricts the DW_OP_plus operator, preventing it from being used to describe the evaluation of runtime values on the expression stack. These patches try to align the semantics of DW_OP_plus and DW_OP_minus with that of the DWARF definition, which pops two elements off the expression stack, performs the operation and pushes the result back on the stack.

This is done in three stages:
• The first patch (LLVM) adds support for DW_OP_plus_uconst.
• The second patch (Clang) contains changes all its uses from DW_OP_plus to DW_OP_plus_uconst.
• The third patch (LLVM) changes the semantics of DW_OP_plus and DW_OP_minus to be in line with its DWARF meaning. This patch includes the bitcode upgrade from legacy DIExpressions.

Wolfgang Pieb 5c49cf1beb Reapply r294532, reverted in r294787.
Store instructions can have more than one memory operand as a result
of optimizations that fold different stores into one.
When we identify spill instructions to generate DBG_VALUE instructions
to record the spilling of a variable, we disregard stores with
multiple memory operands for now. We may miss some relevant spills but
the handling is a bit more complex, so we'll do it in a different patch.

It caused undefined behavior in VarLoc. As far as I investigated,

  - VarLoc::VarLoc() treats negative offset value as InvalidKind.
    Consider the case that (int64_t)MI.getOperand(1).getImm() is negative and whether it satisfies ((uint64_t)Offset < (1ULL << 32)).

  - Comparison operators in VarLoc behave undefined since VarLoc::Loc.Hash is uninitialized in case of InvalidKind.

I guess Offset (in VarLoc) could be made aware of signed, but I am not sure.
So I have reverted it for now.

Adrian Prantl 7b500b4bdf [IR] Remove the DIExpression field from DIGlobalVariable.
This patch implements PR31013 by introducing a
DIGlobalVariableExpression that holds a pair of DIGlobalVariable and
DIExpression.

Currently, DIGlobalVariables holds a DIExpression. This is not the
best way to model this:

(1) The DIGlobalVariable should describe the source level variable,
    not how to get to its location.

(2) It makes it unsafe/hard to update the expressions when we call
    replaceExpression on the DIGLobalVariable.

(3) It makes it impossible to represent a global variable that is in
    more than one location (e.g., a variable with multiple
    DW_OP_LLVM_fragment-s). We also moved away from attaching the
    DIExpression to DILocalVariable for the same reasons.

This reapplies r289902 with additional testcase upgrades and a change

I forgot to implement a Bitcode upgrade for the case where a DIGlobalVariable

version they are.
My plan of record is to roll the planned follow-up patch that adds a
unit: field to DIGlobalVariable into this patch before recomitting.
This way we only need one Bitcode upgrade for both changes (with a
version flag in the bitcode record to safely distinguish the record
formats).

Paul Robinson 9799671d21 Recommit r288212: Emit 'no line' information for interesting 'orphan' instructions.
DWARF specifies that "line 0" really means "no appropriate source
location" in the line table. By default, use this for branch targets
and some other cases that have no specified source location, to
prevent inheriting unfortunate line numbers from physically preceding
instructions (which might be from completely unrelated source).

Updated patch allows enabling or suppressing this behavior for all
unspecified source locations.

Adrian Prantl baf9211007 Fix LLVM's use of DW_OP_bit_piece in DWARF expressions.
LLVM's use of DW_OP_bit_piece is incorrect and a based on a
misunderstanding of the wording in the DWARF specification. The offset
argument of DW_OP_bit_piece refers to the offset into the location
that is on the top of the DWARF expression stack, and not an offset
into the source variable. This has since also been clarified in the
DWARF specification.

This patch fixes all uses of DW_OP_bit_piece to emit the correct
offset and simplifies the DwarfExpression class to semi-automaticaly
emit empty DW_OP_pieces to adjust the offset of the source variable,
thus simplifying the code using DwarfExpression.

While this is an incompatible bugfix, in practice I don't expect this
to be much of a problem since LLVM's old interpretation and the
correct interpretation of DW_OP_bit_piece differ only when there are
gaps in the fragmented locations of the described variables or if
individual fragments are smaller than a byte. LLDB at least won't
interpret locations with gaps in them because is has no way to present
undefined bits in a variable, and there is a high probability that an
old-form expression will be malformed when interpreted correctly,
because the DW_OP_bit_piece offset will be outside of the location at
the top of the stack.

As a nice side-effect, this patch enables us to use a more efficient
encoding for subregisters: In order to express a sub-register at a
non-zero offset we now use a DW_OP_bit_piece instead of shifting the
value into place manually.

This patch also adds missing test coverage for code paths that weren't
exercised before.

Adrian Prantl b835e6ee0f Teach LiveDebugValues about lexical scopes.
This addresses PR26055 LiveDebugValues is very slow.

Contrary to the old LiveDebugVariables pass LiveDebugValues currently
doesn't look at the lexical scopes before inserting a DBG_VALUE
intrinsic. This means that we often propagate DBG_VALUEs much further
down than necessary. This is especially noticeable in large C++
functions with many inlined method calls that all use the same
"this"-pointer.

For example, in the following code it makes no sense to propagate the
inlined variable a from the first inlined call to f() into any of the
subsequent basic blocks, because the variable will always be out of
scope:

void sink(int a);
void __attribute((always_inline)) f(int a) { sink(a); }
void foo(int i) {
   f(i);
   if (i)
     f(i);
   f(i);
}

This patch reuses the LexicalScopes infrastructure we have for
LiveDebugVariables to take this into account.

The effect on compile time and memory consumption is quite noticeable:
I tested a benchmark that is a large C++ source with an enormous
amount of inlined "this"-pointers that would previously eat >24GiB
(most of them for DBG_VALUE intrinsics) and whose compile time was
dominated by LiveDebugValues. With this patch applied the memory
consumption is 1GiB and 1.7% of the time is spent in LiveDebugValues.

Adrian Prantl 82629e7ee8 PR26055: Speed up LiveDebugValues by replacing lists with bitvectors.
This patch modifies the LiveDebugValues pass to use more efficient set
data structures as outlined in PR26055. Both VarLocSet and VarLocList are
now SparseBitVectors which allows us to perform much faster bitvector
arithmetic on them.

The speedup can be in the order of minutes especially on ASANified code.

The change is not NFC in the assembler output because the inserted
DBG_VALUEs are now sorted by variable and location.

Many thanks to Daniel Berlin for helping design the improved algorithm and

Adrian Prantl 4eeaa0da04 [PR27284] Reverse the ownership between DICompileUnit and DISubprogram.
Currently each Function points to a DISubprogram and DISubprogram has a
scope field. For member functions the scope is a DICompositeType. DIScopes
point to the DICompileUnit to facilitate type uniquing.

Distinct DISubprograms (with isDefinition: true) are not part of the type
hierarchy and cannot be uniqued. This change removes the subprograms
list from DICompileUnit and instead adds a pointer to the owning compile
unit to distinct DISubprograms. This would make it easy for ThinLTO to
strip unneeded DISubprograms and their transitively referenced debug info.

Motivation
----------

Materializing DISubprograms is currently the most expensive operation when
doing a ThinLTO build of clang.

We want the DISubprogram to be stored in a separate Bitcode block (or the
same block as the function body) so we can avoid having to expensively
deserialize all DISubprograms together with the global metadata. If a
function has been inlined into another subprogram we need to store a
reference the block containing the inlined subprogram.

Derek Schuff fadd113c9b Introduce MachineFunctionProperties and the AllVRegsAllocated property
MachineFunctionProperties represents a set of properties that a MachineFunction
can have at particular points in time. Existing examples of this idea are
MachineRegisterInfo::isSSA() and MachineRegisterInfo::tracksLiveness() which
will eventually be switched to use this mechanism.
This change introduces the AllVRegsAllocated property; i.e. the property that
all virtual registers have been allocated and there are no VReg operands
left.

With this mechanism, passes can declare that they require a particular property
to be set, or that they set or clear properties by implementing e.g.
MachineFunctionPass::getRequiredProperties(). The MachineFunctionPass base class
verifies that the requirements are met, and handles the setting and clearing
based on the delcarations. Passes can also directly query and update the current
properties of the MF if they want to have conditional behavior.

This change annotates the target-independent post-regalloc passes; future
changes will also annotate target-specific ones.
